Filter media during cycle?

Hello everyone,

I signed up for this thread a while back but circumstances changed and I could not pursue my tank. However, I am back and seriously using the site and have my equipment ordered so its going to happen! To my question:

What media should I be running during the cycle? I am going to go the shrimp route for the process. I have a HOB because of space and living situations. I will be running an aquaclear 70 on a 30 gallon tank. I plan to use chemi pure, sponge, phosguard and a poly filter pad in the HOB. Will be a special grade sand substrate with dry rock. Just wondering what of the above list I should run during the cycle? Thanks for any help, sorry if this has been asked a million times, I am bad at finding what I want with the search.

You don't need to run any media during cycling. On the other hand, it seems to me that none of the things you mention would hurt either. I think that if you want to try to get a head start on reducing phosphates you could run your phos guard during cycling.

What you don't want is anything that will remove the ammonia or nitrites. That would be counter-productive.

Thanks!! Yeah that's what I was wondering, I just didn't know from experience which of these media would filter out the ammonia and nitrates. I did like the idea of getting something to pick up some of the phosphates, as I hope that a ton does not leech from the rock, from reading I hear that's probably what will happen. Thanks again I just want to make sure that I did not soak up any of the product I am trying to grow.

If anyone has any suggestions for changes or additions to the media I am for sure open to hear them!
