Filter Mystery - can anyone help?

Hi there - I have a problem with an AC70 HOB filter.
It stopped working after I lost power a couple weeks ago. I thought the pump was burned out, so yesterday I replaced it.
While at the store, they plugged in the old pump and found that it ran, but I bought the replacement anyway because I thought maybe the old one was just running really slowly.
I put the AC70 (complete with new pump) on the tank today. I plugged it in dry first (only for a second) to make sure it worked, then put it on the tank, filled it and plugged it in - nothing.
I'm kind of irritated about this now......
Anyone have any thoughts on this?? Possible cause of problem, or a solution??
Thanks!!

give it a light tap with something
I second that. My AC (can't remember the size) would do that sometimes; just not work at random times and then just as randomly would then work.

I'll try tapping it. Hopefully that will solve it, although.... should something brand new be jammed?
- I think the outlet is fine because it's the same one I used for the successful pre-test.

Plug something else into the outlet (like a worklight or radio or something) and see if that might be the problem. Perhaps the power outage crashed the outlet?

this is very common with aqua clear filters. By testing it dry will often make it go axel and will need a spin to get started with water. So take the intake tube out, with water in filter and plugged in, look down into the pump, you will see the impeller blades, take a thin pen or screwdriver and just give it a spin. Once the impeller is going put the intake tube back on.

The impeller shaft might be a bit bent or worn out. That may be the reason why this is happening.

If I remember you can turn the suction all the way to one side, then I would blast a stream n with a turkey baster. I have three 110 (70???) they renumbered a few years ago I can't remember. Mine have run for years without doing that, but I remember the problem.

That's similar to what I do. I fill the box with water, set the flow regulator to low, turn it on, then move the flow to high. And what block head said - they don't like dry starts. Mine won't fill itself at all, I have to do it manually. I guess that's essentially priming it.

Yay! I got it going again!
I tried tapping it first, then I tried puffing it with the turkey baster, and then I just moved the impeller manually and that's what got it started.
Thanks for all the suggestions!!!
