i have a emperor 280 on my 44g pent i want to no should i use a filter pad or no filter pad or just run the carbon media or both ?

I would just run carbon in a filter bag, but some people like to do some mechanical filtration. It's a personal choice, but if you use the filter pads, I would suggest cleaning them frequently.

I was using 2 rena filstars in my 120 and dedcided to get rid of them!
after a couple weeks My algae problem Is GONE! And i didn't even have any filter media in the canisters! Just small LR pieces . A skimmer .Enough LR and GOOD FLOW! is all i NEED

try just the pads if you are running a skimmer

No Filters. Like 3rotorFD said. They cause pollution. The liverock is your main filter.

I like the Emporers myself.They are a pretty handy piece.The clamshell compartments are very good for carbon.As for filter media Its your call. Just beware that they do need frequent cleaning twice a week for sure. Good place to use polyfilters too.
