Filter sock cleaning methods

Hey everyone,
I have been cleaning my filter socks by washing in the washer w about 1/4 cup of bleach and 2 tablespoons of dawn dish washing soap.
Is this not recommended?
What are your methods?

I appreciate your comments/ thoughts.

there was a long thread on this not too long ago, but i just wash mine in the washer with nothing more than water for a longer period..

I would skip the dish soap. There is prob enough residual soap in the washer to accomplish what you are using. Plus I wouldn't think soap of any kind is a good thing other than bleach. Bleach evaporates soap doesn't.

I rinse mine, then let it soak in water/bleach for a couple days, then rinse and air dry. I rotate between 2 changing every 5-7 days.

I inside the socks out out (since the detritus is on the inside), toss in the washer with a couple cups or so of bleach (just pour for a bit) and run a wash cycle on hot water (heat activates bleach). After that I run a "second rinse cycle", my washer has a setting for an additional rinse. I think most do.

I like the additional rinse to both make sure the bleach is gone and when I run it the water always seems to be dirty on the second rinse so it's cleaning them further. I've tried running a third rinse cycle but the water on that cycle was pretty much clean so it doesn't seem nessesary for me.

i like the washing machine on hot with bleach and a second rinse, sometimes if they still smell like bleach ill soak em over night in a bucket of ro/di water(makes me feel better)

If it freaks you out buy some dechlorinator from any chain fish store and put some in during the second rinse

Thank you guys for the responses.
I ask because I am trying to eliminate all reasons as to why I am getting hair algae again.
My nitrates are at 0.00ppm
My phosphates are at 0.08ppm
Could it be possible that the residue from soap contribute to hair algae?
Could it be possible that the socks are so clogged that even after washing there are still nutrients which can be causing hair algae?

A little more info......
RO/DI unit less than six months old
Metal halides radiums less than six months old
Superbrites actinids 7 to 8 yrs old

I have been inverting mine and tossing them in the washing machine by themselves. Come out quite clean.... No bleach no soap, just a hot cycle....

Are you feeding the tank and if so what and how much?

I just read the thread that trureef posted here and looks like my Dawn dish washing soaps is a big contributor of leaching phosphates back into my system.
I will rehash the socks with just hot water this time and see how this helps me.

Wash cycle, extra rinse, no bleach, no soap. They come clean every time. I also have the socks that are very fine mesh like, easier to clean and take more particulates out of the water then the poly socks

NO soap ! That will at least irritate fish . I don't add as much bleach. Just an ounce or so. Do turn it inside out. Single rinse then sun dry. Chlorine will evaporate in the sun. I wash every 3 days. Otherwise, I just think it all starts to rot in the sack.

I turn them inside out, wash in bleach only in washing machine. Give them an extra rinse cycle. Air dry. No problem, works great. Had same socks for a year now.

^^^+1
This is exactly how I do it also. I change the sock out weekly.

I feed two cubes of mysid shrimp every other day and 1/4 teaspoon of formula 1 and 2 pellet once a week.
Once a month I feed cycolpese.

That's it.

Well if you haven't had PnN issues before and your bioload hasn't changed any and that's the same feeding you've done as well I wouldn't think it'd be related to what you are putting into the tank. I believe in the KISS principle myself, if you don't know 100% what something is made out of or what is in something then I refuse to put it in my tank with one exception. I need to see that many others have done it already and they haven't seen their tank do something bad which is why I assume you are asking on the forums about this :fun2:

I use the garden hose and just rinse my filter socks out very well. Takes at most 10 minutes and then I hang them out to dry in the sunlight for a couple hours. When it gets to be more work to clean them then use them, I buy a new set.
