I turn them inside out, wash in bleach only in washing machine. Give them an extra rinse cycle. Air dry. No problem, works great. Had same socks for a year now.
Turn inside out spray with hose or shower head, smack against hard surface until dry, repeat 3 times until no brown water is coming off sock. Cleans them safely with no chemicals and no danger of leaching chlorine/soap into the aquarium.
Does it really matter how often you swap the filter socks? I'm wondering when it'll become a nitrate factory and if testing your water is the only way of finding out when to replace the filter socks.
Small bucket with one part bleach and 8 parts water. Soak for 24-48 hours, rinse wth high pressured nozzle from the gardenhose, air dry then rinse in bucket of RODI water, air dry again. Sock comes out super white, like new. Change out my socks every two weeks, should probably do no longer than 1 week.
