filter sock holder

i was walking thru Menards the other day ,looking for ideas for a filter sock holder. i found a plastic flashing piece that fits on your vent pipe on the roof. a 4" sock fits perfectly since it's made for a 4" pipe. it measures 12X16 so it fits well in my 55 gallon sump. fyi

lol, thats what I'm using as well.. I took an empty salt bucket and notched it out to hold a 4" T pipe (I think it's called something other than a T). The bucket holds 2 of these and easily handles my 2 - 1" drains. Great holder for filter socks and it only costs about $8

I bought a 24" piece of 4" pvc from HD for a couple dollars, cut a couple inches off each end, glued the ends side by side, fabbed a plexi bracket from some scraps, couple 1" tee's, maybe $10 total....

A filter sock is a good way to filter out "larger floaties" from the water before it gets into your sump/refugium. Depending on the "micron size" you will get more or less filtration.

Here is the contraption that I put together

The elbows near the wall of the return pipes are threaded so I can easily move the pipe so I can change out the socks.

I was considering a filter sock for my sump, but not sure if it is required....could it cause more harm than good? Any opinions out there?

No - it is not required but I think the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

It will catch a surprisingly amount of "gunk" that your system will not have to break down and deal with AS LONG AS you change the socks regularly. Regularly means once to twice PER WEEK, depending on your bioload and how fast the socks fill up with gunk.

So what are the negatives? Are there any?

I guess you could list changing and cleaning socks a chore that might be on the negative side of things.

A lot of times a filter sock (even after being washed) will make your skimmer go crazy for awhile so you might have to get used to dialing back on the skimmer for awhile after each sock change.

The only real negative impact using a sock ever made on my system was when a fish decided to go over my overflow and ended up in the sock where he died rather quickly. Had the sock NOT been there, I probably would have found the fish alive and well and swimming around in the sump. So I do attribute a fish death which is a definate negative to the use of filter socks.

Personally, I use the larger 7" socks so I made a holder out of 6" PVC just by cutting holes all over it.

Two small PVC pipe sections span the top of the sump so the sock just hangs between them. VERY simple and easy to make/replace.

Socks are made out of white felt

what kind of felt do you use??? i would think that if i made it hang from all 4 sides of the top of the intake chamber, it would act as a bubble trap as well???

i just made a bunch of socks. I took just regular felt from joannes fabrics and sewed them up. I sewed a seam in the top where i threaded some 1/4 tubing that i had a bunch of around. works better than the pre made ones because the tube bends a little and makes it easy to get in and out.

Anyone else using a rubber band? :D

I would personally be scared to death of the top of the sock being out of the water like that. Unless you are religious about cleaning it everyday, they tend to get clogged up and overflow.

Just your standard white felt. I've used stuff from a fabric store and stuff from Walmart. Both work fine.

It does act as a bubble trap as well. You see it has sides sewn on so theres no need to hang it from all 4 sides.
