Its a big pain flipping them inside out but its possible. Just takes a little time. I wash mine once in bleach(flipped inside out) then put them through another wash cycle(flipped back right side in) but with no bleach then allow them to air dry for a minimum of 24 hours. The chlorine will evaporate clean and will cause no harm to the tank. I've been doing it this way for years and its works great! Over time the fiber of the sock will break down and you will need to replace them. My sump runs 2 socks at a time and I change them about ever 7-10 days. I've got 30-40 socks that I cycle through so when I change them out I let them dry out and then store them in a hefty tote until I'm ready to was about 2/3's of them. MOST IMPORTANTLY.....DO NOT WASH THEM AT HOME!!! Trust me the lady of the house will be pretty peeved that you just "dirtied up her washer to clean those nasty things":lmao:
If you clean them while they are still wet, you can use a hose and pressure wash them from both sides. They will turn inside out easier while they are still wet. After about 4 or 5 uses I bleach them after the pressure wash.
Jake, isn't that like $200 in filter socks....jeez. I was thinking the same thing about the washer at home. I already get dirty looks for using the "good towels"
I don't bother to turn my socks inside-out. We have a high-efficiency Kenmore front loader and I load them up with all my dirty tank towels and wash everything with a about 2 Tbs. of HE detergent and 1/3 cup of bleach. I do an extra rinse to make sure all the detergent is gone and then I dry everything on low heat in the dryer. The socks don't look brand new after a wash, but they aren't dirty at all either.
I wouldn't be using ANY detergants. Even with a second rinse they can leave chemical residues behind. The only way to completey rinse the sock clean would be to wash them again in a soloution with the oppositte PH. Most cleansers and detergants are alkaline in ph so an acidic rinse would be necessary to bring the ph back to neutral (7).
