filter sock

Was wondering if people are using filter socks or not? and why or why they dont? Sorry for the rookie questions getting to the final stages of my set up and only want to make one online purchase

I have 10 of them that I change weekly. I've heard good and bad things. Mine are 200 micron socks. Using them to keep my water free and clear of any small floating debree.

I use filter socks. Make sure you change thet out regularly.

I use them for clearing up the water column of fine debris. Also handy if a snail somehow makes it down your overflow (depending on the style). strongly suggest it be located where WHEN it becomes clogged it overflows INTO the sump...

+ 1 - I don't use them anymore. I just dose bacteria, feed heavy and weekly water changes.

I use them two socks in the first chamber of the sump set to overflow into the sump. Change them weekly throwing the pods back into the sump. I soak the dirty ones in a bucket in the garage then when all but the last set are dirty I put them in the washing machine with a sliver of ivory soap. then air dry. Wife does not know they go in the clothes washer yet so be careful.........:fun5:

It may be a little ghetto but I hooked up a maxi jet to a water bottle (cut the bottom end off of the water bottle) and I fill it with filter floss... After a few days I just throw away the filter floss and add a new sheet. I get the filter floss in bulk at Walmart so its not super expensive or anything.

CReyes350 - Nice diy man!! May have to give this a try / for a quick mid-week cleaning. I assume you have it in one of your sump chambers ? Also, at Ana's Fabric they carry 100% natural poly felt. I think I paid like 8 buck for a decent size roll. I have use this material before for filter sock and works awesome.

Yep, I have mine in the sump and I feel that it works pretty good for me. I'll have to check out the poly fill @ Ana's

I used them for a long time. I'm too lazy now. I have not witnessed a real difference. I run a power head in my sump do cr*p doesn't settle. I think the are marginally beneficial if meticulously changed.

awesome diy there. I can't believe I didn't think of it.

To the orig question... I use 5 micron socks that I need to change about every 3-4 days. I dose lanthanum into my overflow so I need to catch the precipitate. It does make for crystal clear water.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but people have been asking about the diy.

I use a plain water bottle and the adaptor that comes with the maxijet (any bottle and any maxi jet). I fill it with the poly fill from Walmart (make sure it has no additives such as the fire resistant stuff) and I currently run phosguard in it to deal with the diatoms in my FO tank. You can use any media you like pretty much. Very simple design and super effective.

The picture I posted was one I found on the internet, so I'm not sure about what that person was using.

I've tried them off and on since starting out. My current EShopps RS-200 sump uses the 6 inch rectangle socks. It is a pain to change them out but they do keep the water relatively clear of floating debris.
