Filter Sock

Hello everyone,

When should a filter sock be used and why? What is the function of a sock and what are the drawbacks if any of using one? Thanks!

never all they do is trap waste and turn into a nitrate factory. i use a 100 micron filter material in my setup that all the water coming form the main and refugium passes through and i change that once a week. it just helps keep the water a bit clearer then without.

I use a filter sock. My water is particulate free and nitrate free. I have 2 socks and change them every 3-4 days. Cleaning is a snap. First I turn it inside out and rinse off the big stuff. Place the sock in a 2 quart wide mouth juice container with water. Shake it hard. Change the water a few times until it is clean. Then soak the sock in the same container with 2 oz of soap free laundry bleach for an hour. Wash with fresh water several times. Soak it over night in water with 2 drops of aquarium dechlorinate added. Hang it up to dry. Easy. R

Filter socks work great. They trap crud, quiet your sump and reduce microbubbles.

I use filter socks in mine and change them out every 2 days. They strain out some of the crud but also some of the good but water stays particle free. I bought a bunch of 100 micron from filterbag.com so I can rotate them out during the week

Thanks guys. So I have 3 votes for a filter sock and one against. Would it be okay to clean the filter sock with bleach in my washing machine as long as its rinsed twice. I'm just a little uncomforable with the idea of cleaning anything with bleach that will go in my tank. Now how many votes for using bleach for cleaning the sock?

A lot of people use bleach for cleaning the sock. I let mine air out for a week before I reuse them.

I only use my filter sock when I blow off my rocks and clean the glass.

Filter socks will also cut down on microbubbles coming in from the overflow. I change mine out once a week and just dispose of it. I have a box of 60 so its a years worth. Definitely worth it.

You will notice a difference in the clarity of your water and the amount of debri floating around. I run a sock 24/7 and it collects everything that runs into the sump.

I also use bleach and the washing machine once a week. I just pre rinse the big stuff out of it wash it on hot with about 2 tablespoons of bleach.

I have 2 socks so every 3-4 days I switch the sock out with a clean one. For cleaning all I do is take it outside and hose it out real good. A strong hose works good enough for me.

I also have two socks that I rotate every 3-4 days. The one thing I also do which I have not seen mentioned is to wash in the washing machine with HOT water, not warm or cold. I've found that it gets out more of the crap... BTW, I do not use bleach at all.
