filter sock?

I currently have a 29 gallon sump that I use as a refugium it has a hang on skimmer on one side(where the water enters the sump). My refugium currently is very full of mossy looking algae plus it looks like I have allot of detritus. I have not been getting any cheato growth. It seems like the detritus collects in it and it starts to look half dead. What would be the best way to fix it? (oh i have about 3 inches of sand in the refugium as well) I was thinking about adding a filter sock for a bit? Has anyone done that before?

Someone said I might add a pump in the sump to move the water around more? What do you think?

if you can tumble it, that's ideal. if not, you can shake it off so detritus doesn't stay settled on it and inhibit growth. you can also just increase flow and that may make a difference. if you go with a sock make sure you keep it very clean or you'll have the crud build up. easiest to rotate a clean one in at least once a week. add a pump or increase flow if you can or at least rotate the ball regularly and you should be in good shape...

Him, Thanks! So add a small pump that will keep movement in the refugium? I always thought you wanted slow moving water in a refugium? Does everyone get detritus in there sump? Do you just leave it allone or do you clean it out? thanks

Yes we do get detritus in the sump, we usually empty and clean with a vinagar solution about every 3-4 months or when the detritus gets built up pretty bad, with all the flow in the tank it has to settle somewhere and the sump is usually that place.

I told you to tumble it! :) Guess I was right. LOL
I dont get build up nearly as much since adding a pump and filter sock. All the "stuff" catches in the sock!
