Have a sump with refugium but hated the socks. Ran the lines down to the water line to decrease noise. Seems to be working fine.
 
Filter socks, given you have the fortitude to change them every other day are one of the most efficient means of nutrient export. I went without them for a few months and my tank struggled. After two weeks of being back on them, the tank looks great and my phosphates are nearly undetectable :)
 
Up until my latest build I never used socks. Always thought it was silly to trap nutrients in a "sock" and since I focused on softies in my mind there was no real reason to do so. Now since I've changed directions I find them to be a real maintenance saver. Yes you have to change them every couple of days but I keep a number of them on hand and it might take me one minute to switch them out. I now find I actually spend less time on vacuuming detritus from my sump. Some may disagree, but I find them a very valuable tool.
