Filter socks, given you have the fortitude to change them every other day are one of the most efficient means of nutrient export. I went without them for a few months and my tank struggled. After two weeks of being back on them, the tank looks great and my phosphates are nearly undetectable
Up until my latest build I never used socks. Always thought it was silly to trap nutrients in a "sock" and since I focused on softies in my mind there was no real reason to do so. Now since I've changed directions I find them to be a real maintenance saver. Yes you have to change them every couple of days but I keep a number of them on hand and it might take me one minute to switch them out. I now find I actually spend less time on vacuuming detritus from my sump. Some may disagree, but I find them a very valuable tool.
