Filter Socks

most all suplliers sell them. I got mine from Marine Depot if I remember correctly.

I have mine catching the water from my drain cause it helps with the many bubbles produced.

You only need one

I have 2 for easy cleaning and no down time. I also have my at the drain. :)

I don't use a filter sock. I used to but it catches too many pods and actually a lot of stomatellas as well. I like to keep as much life in the tank as possible so I quit using them.

I just siphon any debris off the bottom of my sump when I do my water changes. This way all the critters stay in the tank.

Pat

Is there any reason you couldn't use the end of an old pair of nylons as a fiter sock?

I use old nylon stockings to put my activated charcoal in prior to putting it in a canister tray.

Yeah, you can use nylons. You just have to figure how to secure it... Actually, that's not a bad idea.

We use knee high nylons all the time. Get them from your local dollar store.

At the rate my wife runs her nylons, I'll have a steady supply!:D

I thought I heard once that you couldn't use nylons, something about the dye in them, What kind do you use? (since what I heard may not be true)

Sorry, but in reading this thread I got a mental picture of a bunch of fish geeks in line at the Dollar Store tomorrow, all holding packages of panty hose. Not pretty.

Actually, I don't think there would be a problem using nylons. I used to do that years ago and I never really noticed any adverse effects. Even used them to hold carbon at one time. Just be sure to use the one without the hole in it . :)

I went to the fabric store and asked for clearance 100% polyester. I didn't care what color it came in, just looked for how permeable the material is. Polyester is what some filter socks are made of. I used the "invisible" thread, which is nothing more than thin fishline, and sewed up several filter socks. @ $1.50 a yard. I made about 5 pretty big ones.

LOL what would the dollar General think of a bunch of fish geeks in line with the Hose. Great mental picture.
