Filter socks???

I recently set up a 240 and was filtering the discharge pipes with filter socks, but am running into a little trouble. I know some people use these, but what are the pros/cons of their use? If you use them what is the maintenance schedule like for them? And what is the best way to clean them? Thanks for any help.

I like using them on my return to the sump cause it stops the microbubbles, and its an extra mechanical fiter, I clean it about once a week, I first hose it down, then throw it in the washer with no soap.

I have about 14 filter socks and change them every other day. When I get to the last pair I throw them in the washing machine and only add bleach and run them in a short cycle then run it again with only hot water and let them air dry. I have been doing this for 1 1/2 years and never had a problem. I also like the fact that it keeps all the junk out of my return pump and makes my water look clearer.

Do all reefers own their houses ? Anybody rent around here and doesn't have washer/drier in the unit ? : )

This always gets me because i like to use socks,..but i don't have a washing machine at home....

ps,..sorry for hijacking,..ill go away now

I stopped using filter socks a few months ago and started using a bubble trap with live rock like the one melevsreef.com builds. I did notice my skimmate is darker and thicker.

just soak in bleach or 10 minutes, and rince a few times.. you will be good to go

i only use them for reducing micro bubbles..i see no other benefit unless you want to change them out often which is a PITA

Mac Inger,
I was trying to find were Marc mention it ... I can post a picture of mine, when I get home from work. It's basically just a 4" L x 4" W x sump height (mines 12" high) with a 1-1/4" hole on a removable top. Made of 1/4" acrylic use for window plane. If you don't have weld-on #4, you can use plastic drink bottles .

This is an old version (newer version later tonight):

I stopped using filter floss and carbon, due to the fact that after a few days the water started backing up.

Do you guys turn them inside out in the washer? I just hose mine off, starting inside out first and if they get too stained I'll bleach them but since it doesn't really matter what they look like(being in the sump), I rarely bleach. Mine get clogged up within a week to become nitrate bombs.
All the crap it picks up, I can't see going w/o.

I used to change mine out every 2-3 days.........now I change it when its about to overflow............. nitrates read 0 all the time
