Just curious as to how many of you all use Filter Socks for your sumps...

How often do you change them???

Where do you buy yours???

I have used them. They work real well . Only thing is that they have to be replaced all the time . they clogg up fast

I use a large one and just have to rinse it out once a week and still have the 2 I started with for 2 months. I have a lot of water too. I am getting some new ones at Marine depot

I have no nitrates and I leave carbon in my socks. Keeps the water looking really clear....I tried a polyfilter this week in line with my sump. Just after the filter sock chamber in the sump...

As the poly filter slowed the water flow it caused my auto top off to dump more water than needed into the ruturn side of the sump.

I know our current was off a few times this week during the storms (I was in KY)Sump had at least 3 gallons more water than normal....I am supriesed I didn't have a flood.

Needsless to say going back to using just filter socks full of carbon

I used them religiously w my 300. They told me when to change them when the water from the overflows exceeded the ability of the socks to let the water through - usually 4-5 days.

Eventually, I lost all my pods to the filter socks. When I first started using them I'd see pods in them and would try to save them. Eventually, the numbers decreased to none.

I use them when I'm blowing of rocks/stirring up the tank for a couple of days. IME if you leave them on for more than a couple of days nutrients inevitably rise. I tried them all the time and bubble algae and other algae seemed to take off.

Hmmm, haven't thought about using them intermittently... That may be the way to go... I guess I'm just used to setting and forgetting most things... I love automation... ;)

Thanks for the info everyone!!! :D
