Filter/Sponge

I have a 28g Nano Cube. I was wondering what are some better options for the filter/sponge in the media basket? Is the stock sponge good enough to keep purchasing replacement sponges or move onto something different/better?

mechanical filtration is good for the removing larger particulate matter from the water column, this will help create a "cleaner" aquarium, but will not remove or help with nutrient export. It is important to keep physical media such as sponges or filter floss regularly changed or cleaned as they can become nitrate factories and cause issues in an aquarium, especially a nano.

My recommendation is to use mechanical media such as filters and sponges, but to keep them clean and replace them every few days to a week. Other options I would recommend for your media baskets would be additional live rock rubble, this will increase your good bacteria in your tank. As well as leaving a basket space available for carbon or other types of nutrient export media.

Unless your doing a water change and really stir things up, I would just keep the media basket empty.
