ok in my sump the tray on top before the water goes though the bio balls what kind of filter should I use should I have carbon in my sump in a bag or should I have some in the top tray between the 2 filter pads
Ok I'm going to be the first to say stacked sumps are going to become a huge nitrate factory, ditch the bio balls (you have live rock right?) and be very vigilant to change your filter pads at the first sign of soiling and you may be ok. Most times people usually try and avoid mechanical filtration unless it's via skimmer.
I will agree with Lord, and most OP will not keep up on the mechanical filtration to make it useful. You will be better off with live rock, sand and skimmer and skip the bioballs.
+ 1 to lord. I use only a skimmer and a 7 inch filter sock that I change weekly. Sometimes I pull the filter sock to change it up for a couple days. Just makes make my skimmer produce more skimate. Crystal clear and stable water.
A very simple sump set up: water enters through a filter sock (insures no micro bubbles and gets rid of large particles), passes through a protein skimmer, gets pumped into a carbon reactor, then pumps back into the DT.
