So, I'm new - still in my pre-startup.

I'm getting an AquaC Sea Remora HOB from a local person for my 40b.

I'm contemplating my current canster filter (on my freshwater). He says they can be great if you keep them clean.

If I don't need to run it, I'd rather not. Is this skimmer going to be enough?

I tend to get lazy and I know I cannot allow myself to be lazy with my new setup. I want it as easy as possible however.

No sump.

Also - I'm ordering my hydor power heads today - should I get a wave controller?

thanks! appreciate all of the advice I get here

I would probably run both, the AquaC Sea and the canister filters. Canister filters do have to be clean often for it not to become a nirate factory.

IMO, I'd skip the canister. They're really not much use on saltwater tanks. Run the HOB skimmer and I'm assuming you will have rock and sand, which will server as your biofilter. That's about all you need for your filtration in addition to your powerheads. You can skip the wave controller too unless you really want it.

I would upgrade the remora. Its a piece of junk. Biggest issue is its a hang on and if you don't have a method of keeping the tank water level perfect it will be a pain in the *** to keep consistent. Good skimmer is paramount to keep a clean tank.

Ebay that skimmer and buy

Reef Octopus BH50 Multi-Mount Protein Skimmer
or

oh - I don't have it yet, was going to get it used. I thought it got pretty good reviews. Reef Octopus has been recommended though.

I need a HOB because I don't have room for a sump. I'll check those out, thanks! Also gotta read up on hob refugiums.
