I rotate through about 6 socks. I swap them every few days.
To clean them, in the winter i put them in the washing machine with some bleach, then wash them again to make sure the bleach is gone, then let them thoroughly dry out til i can't smell the bleach anymore. In the summer, I just blast them with the hose.
I rotate my 3 filter socks once a week. Just run it them in the washer machine using hot water but NO SOAP. Works just as good as bleach, and is MUCH easier/less of a hassle. Just make sure you air dry them for a day before you put them in your sump, as you don't want tap water in there.
I rotate every 3 days, then once every other week, I throw them in the washer with hot water and hydrogen peroxide. It gets the white and clean again. The by-product of Hydrogen peroxide is hydrogen and oxygen. I don't trust bleach not do I trust natural soaps for my filter socks.
one way you know to change a filter sock, atleast for me, is when it starts to overflow at the top with water because that most likely means the mesh is all clogged up, just my perspective.

can i use straight bleach with water to clean the sock, then rinse it several times till the bleach is gone? i cant really justify washing a few filter socks in the washing machine at my apt complex it costs to much lol i was wondering if i could do this in the sink let it soak in bleach or a bleach and water mix then rinse out in fresh water?
