Filtration question

So I set my sump up, there is a sponge to catch big things in the overflow a sock and a few sponges underneath and yesterday I notice the water clarity wasn't where it had been. This gets me extremely upset because of the amount of time I watch and spend on the tank. So I go get my old HOB filter that I used to use pre sump/refugium and in not even a full day I wake up today and the water is crystal clear. So my question is what do I need to do to maintain this water clarity and what was I doing wrong with the fuge? Will the tank always need the HOB or is there something more I need in the fuge? No macro in it yet. Thanks in advance.

Mike.

is there carbon in your HOB filter? Carbon would clear up the tank if it was in there, put some in your sump (in a mesh bag) either by the return pump inlet or any other area of flow. See if that changes anything

Yes there is carbon in my HOB. Do they sell these bags of carbon at generic places like petco petsmart? Or do I need to buy a filter that's practically a bag and stick it in there. So is it good that the carbon is clearing up the water or is there something else I need to be looking at since carbon is needed to clear up my water?

Don't let anyone tell you HOB mechanical filters aren't needed, now you know first hand that there are still very good reasons to use them, THEY WORK!

Well that makes it simple lol. And indeed I do now know first hand. So do I need to just keep it hanging on the DT? Will it be as effective in the sump although I'm not sure I can make it work since it's a bit large for my sump.

It will be far more effective in your display tank, just remember to add it to your regular maintenance schedule & clean it out.

I was hoping you weren't going to say DT as it doesn't look as appealing there but I guess better water clarity is worth it. And yes not a problem with mx as it seems I'm constantly working on the tank anyways lol. Thanks for your help.

Carbon can be run in the sump too. You can use the HOB filter on the sump if your water level is high enough, use a carbon reactor, figure a way to get a bag of carbon in the flow, use a canister filter or even put it in an old box filter and use an air pump.

I have three tanks other than the DT and that the only thing I run. Just take some husbantry.
