I would use chemical filtration , carbon and po4 remover, and maybe some small hob skimmer, but im skimmer fan:), in such small tank ordinary water change can be enough to keep parameters in check

Active carbon and phosphate removers are most popular type of chemical filtration, but purigen is excelent media too. Similar to carbon, remove organics, and you can regenerate it too.

get a fluval or Eheim canister...and no they are not a bad thing to have on a tank. I keep it clean and have no sumps on my tanks. I use Chemi-Pure Elite ...I find it works better than Chemi-Pure.

Yes, but for such small tank maybe is better to use hang on filter, they are less expensive and easier to clean. They have smaller volume and you will need to change media more often, but that is not a bad thing
-there is also small hang on skimmers what you can put on back or side of the tank if you decide to use one

So I have it sorted down to a ac20 with a media basket but what media should I run with it?

You dnt need any media while your tank isnt cycled, month at least. Later on, active carbon will help you with organics and you will need some phosphate remover too probably. But i suggest you to read about reef tanks and filtration, there is many texts on internet, you can find whole books about it. Its not hard but you need to learn some general things about it if you want to have successful tank

I have read alot of filtration but it's vague. I was asking more of your guys opinion on what I should run.

+1 on the Eheim canister. Be sure to get one with the double-tap connectors for ease of maintenance. I'd get rid of the Ehfisubstrat it comes with (if you get the classic) and replace with Siporax. You can add any other media you want in bags (carbon, etc).
