What will you put in the tank? I have a 55 with everything HOB. the tank's been set up several years, and is stable and doing well with a decent amount of fish.
Here's my set-up:
HOB skimmer - CPR BakPak. If you will have a lot of bioload on the tank, I suggest you either get the double BakPak or invest in an Aqua C Remora Pro.
HOB refugium - CPR Aquafuge, lit 24/7. Packed with chaeto. I remove about a half gallon bucket full every week. This is a great investment. Nutrients such as phospates and nitrates are exported into the plants (i.e., fertilizer). Also grows a bunch of pods which add biodiversity and snacks to the tank.
HOB Power filter - Rena, pretty good flow. I usually run it empty unless I need chemical filtration. Much easier to change media and rinse mechanical filters than a cannister.
With all the surface agitation, I don't need a power head in the tank for flow.
I also have a shallow sand bed (1-2") and about 70 lbs live rock. Lights are 4 x 65-watt PCs, and I have a lot of decorative macroalgae as well as some very hardy mushrooms, polyps, leather corals and a few LPS.
Fish in there now:
green wolf eel blenny
pair of waspfish
small niger trigger (growing out for larger tank)
small blue spotted rabbitfish (also growing out for larger tank)
small angler (needs to be moved soon or he'll eat the trigger)
once I've moved a few fish, I'll put my Hawaiian leaf fish back in the tank...
Good luck and have fun setting up and stocking the tank.
