Fin & Feather - Show tank - Ecosystem's Miracle Mud

I went to Fin & Feather a couple times and they have a beautiful show tank that is around 180gallons with corals and fish. The filtration system is Ecosystem's Miracle Mud and a Calcium reactor. No Skimmer! The tank is well stocked and has been set up for more that 5 years. This is a Reef tank that I would like to achieve! Maybe someone from F&F can comment on the maintenance and Pro/Cons of the tank?

Since they are using Ecosystem's Miracle Mud with success, I did a little research and the reviews of Mud have been controversial. I am looking into setting up a tank and trying to educate myself what is the best system? Should I seriously look into a mud system?

Or is a Refugium /Skimmer better?

One item I like about the tank is how simple the system is.

I was wondering what you think?

IMO it depends on what type of corals you want to keep.

If you are leaning towards a SPS coral dominated tank, the miracle mud might not be the best way.

The show tank had a couple SPS Montipora. They were reddish in color and were very large. The tank has MH which may be the main reason why they are doing well.

Actually the tank has various/many Corals (leather corals, Brain, Mushroom, large Zoanthids) and all of them look fantastic. The tank has a minimal amount of fish (low - bio load). I couldn't tell how many fish since there was a lot of live rock with many places for the fish to hide. When I first looked at the tank I thought it had only two fish. But after staring at it for a while you would see a couple here and there pop out of the rock work. The tank has a 4" substrate.

If you are referring to the show tank in the main tank area, I completely agree....that tank is absoultely spectacular!! It is nice to see a very simple set-up. It would be nice to see a Tank of the Month article about a "poor man's" tank with very few basic equipment. My 180 consists of a sump, fuge w/chaeto and a skimmer. IMHO....my tank is just a nice as the ones with lots of fancy equipment.

I agree with cindy288 that i would like to see a tank of the month with a modest set up too with some time lapse photography on how it got the way it did.

yes ! id like to see normal (affordable) tanks also. i have to admit if i win lotto i would have this months tank of the month in my house asap! its my favorite tank so far

Hi

You really think so?
This tank is Miracle Mud only from the very start, never seen a skimmer

The problem that have seen in several Miracle Mud tanks is the yellow tint in the water. Without a large UV System it is hard to combat this problem. The owner of this 250 gal tank has a 55W UV system.

Best wishes

Jens

Jdroscout....I was there yesterday and I couldn't see in a few of the tanks because the glass was so dirty. I went again today to find the same. A little disapointing

Yup, I really do think so..

I never said it couldn't be done, all I said is that it might not be the best method.

I pesonally set my tank up for the kinds of animals I want to keep. Miracle mud would go against what I am doing.

But then again, what do I know.

Cindy have you hever had a chance to visit the store in Stamford?

IMO by far the nicest display tank in Ct. It's too bad their prices are so high.

No, I haven't been to the store in Stamford. What is the name of it? Is it comparable to F&F? Maybe I will get out there this weekend.

I think it's getting tougher to get good info on SW at F&F now. I love the store and I think everyone tries their best but their is definitly a difference in the SW section. My wife also commented on the dead fish and cloudy dirty tanks the other day when we were in their. I hope they turn this around b/c I really enjoy the store.

I live in Norwalk where is this store in stamford at> never heard of it ..whats it called?....and can you guys tell me good fish stores Near Norwalk ..that Has saltwater fish and corals..other than the Norwalk aquarium

First of all thanks for the positive&negative feedback it is appreciated. Maybe Fortunatan explanation is in order, the last two wks have been unbelivebly busy, also because of very bad weather in the pacific shipments have been rerouted, resheduled, arrived late and i could go on&on.Because of this we have been allowing the fish that are really stressedlonger time in the tanks in hope they willturn around. Fortunately for F&F Brian who worked for us for many yrs is back & we have hired Brent who comes to us from stints at the Texas state aquar.& the national aquar. in baltimore & holds a degree in marine biology, along with josh an avid reefer we believe we have an excellet team. Let me asure everyone that we have a standard here at F&F and we will mantain that standard. Again your comments ARE valued, John
