fin rot?

Afflicted Reefer
How does one treat fin rot in an established reef? I have a purple tang that is discintgrating and sailfin that appears to have caught it and a blonde naso that looks suspect. I cant catch them!!!! is Spectrogram going to kill everything? barebottom tank- autowaterchange-imaculate water quality- cant imagine what the cause is... fluke?

External bacterial infection is not like ich in that there is no quarantee that there is a cure for all cases.

Have you been using UV correctly in both DT and QT?

In general, it is easier to deal with external bacterial infection in a FO tank. Some antibiotics will not wipeout nitrification but will only depress it somewhat.

In a reef tank, I would have to remove infected individual and that use UV in DT and then treat with antibiotics in QT, with or sometimes without nitrification in QT.

UV degrades antibiotics so it cannot be used at the same time.

I always use UV in QT whenever possible, when I am not using a drug that UV degrades.

I sadly dont have a QT. I use ozone at 400 in DT. Is it possible to use carbon and soak some mysis in an oral antibiotic? I have access to about anything- drug wise. Have you tried this approach?

O3 also disinfects like UV.

I think drug by food is likely too slow, but if the fish eats very well it is not impossible.

Treatment against bacterial infection in QT is much shorter in duration than against ich. 7-10 days at the most.

Many containers can be used as a QT against bacterial infection. Even a five-gal bucket can be used for a couple of small fish.

I really dont think I can catch him. (typical reef problem) what would you try orally?
what have you tried that does not harm nitrifying flora?

Antibiotics by food will only have a chance only if the fish eats very well.

If you add antibiotics in food, nitrification is not affected. No antibiotic is so potent that the minute amount in food can affect nitrification.

I have a bias in favor of chloromycetin. This drug seems to be the most potent among the many antibiotics available. This is not proven but I tend to think so. This drug is quite deadly to nitrification bacteria. DO NOT use it directly in water anywhere nitrification is important.

If you can't find chloromycetin, you may have to use kanamycin, neomycin or erythromycin.
