Thanks again. Also, I know he looks like a muppet, but I dont think there is a muppet stonefish! haha

looks to me like a typical S. muppeti

actually-it looks to be a common or reef stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) as this species is abundant, collected frequently, and does well in public aquaria

these are hardy, tolerant fish-but frequently a fish for a species only tank, they are extremely sedentary, grow quite large and of course-- please respect this fish at all times- its a lethal

Not sure on the sp. but it looks awsome! It reminds me of leaf fish, but 10 times fatter, lol.

You should video tape it feeding!

I agree...S. verrucosa from what I can tell.

FWIW, I happened to ask the chief of the ER at Torrance Med. Ctr. if they keep stonefish antivenin in stock and he told me they did not. Torrance is a big hospital, and is in a fairly "affluent" area where there are likely to be more fish tanks, so if they don't keep it, you may want to find out if you're SOL before you get nailed, and maybe even see if you can talk your local ER into keeping the stuff (it's pricy).

Anyhow, keep us posted on the fish...stonies are definitely "special".

How big do these usually get?

This particular stoney runs in the 40 cm - 50 cm range, so that's 15" - 19" or so...definitely "big boys".

OMG...quote from the wikipedea:
"Synanceia verrucosa is a fish species, sometimes lethal to humans, which is known as the reef stonefish or simply stonefish. They are carnivorous ray-finned fish with venomous spines that lives on reef bottoms, camouflaged as a rock. They are the most venomous known fish in the world."
YIKKEEESSS :eek1:
P.s. is this the same type of fish? if so you think the guy knows its venemous? lol

Hmmm, gonna say not a fish lover there. I was expecting him to get stung the way he was picking at that poor fish.

I like this Link alot for a few reasons. Good motion scene showing the fish moving, lots of solid facts, actual pictures of a sting victim and the progression of the venom from initial to later as well as a slow motion feeding of our wonderful blue chromis. So check that one out. Good source is national geographic, they are this small company ive heard has a ok reputation for real facts.

Well, id say thats a good concensus, case closed, I have a Verrucosa.

Do keep us posted with updates and photos...there's definitely some "stonefish envy" going on here! ;)
