Finally a pair of Nigripes aka. Maldives clownfish

Hello all,

I have been trying for 3 years to find a pair of Maldives clownfish...I couldn't so I got a GSM and loved her to death until 2 months ago she started tearing frags of zoanthids off the rocks and tipping stuff over. She was about 4.5-5 inches...a real beaut & brute. I traded her in for some more zoanthids....addicted I guess. We after she was gone the tank didn't look right with out a clownfish so I continued the search for the Maldives. I got a pair delivered today. They look real healthy and are drip acclimating as I type.....Is there anything I should know about these that I might not have read? I'm sure there are some experienced Maldiver's out there. They can't be as aggressive as the GSM.....Or can they? everything I have read said they are pretty mild mannered....I will post pics at some other point...Thank for any additional info.

P.S. One is about 2 inches and the other is about 1-1.5 and they came from the same tank and were using a green carpet as host.

the pair that i have the male is the most bold, if you could call it that, where as the female is extremely shy and easily spooked. i was under the impression they were a fairly aggressive confident clown, but mine are not at all.

QT these fish. from what ive read and heard, they are terrible shippers, and are subject to brooklynella...something i hope you dont have to deal with. good luck.

Horrible shippers. QT is even a crap shoot.

My female would go at it with a 3" GSM and win. :) But never aggressive with me or other tank mates unless they were around the nest.

FYI

Mine are very aggresive also, the 3 inch female would go at it with a 4-5 inch cinnamon clown. She is pretty forcable with the male as well. They are both hiders though, and are easly spooked by people or things moving around the room.

I would be pretty tempted to skip QT if there are no other clownfish and would definately skip it if they are the only fish in the tank.

From everything I've heard they are very difficult to get settled into a new tank and spook easily until settled. Once settled though they are reported to be as hardy as any clownfish though not great spawners in home aquaria.

I have to admit that I did skip quarantine....They are the only clownfish in the tank and the only other fish at the moment is a pretty docile red head elegant psudochromis. The place I got them, said supposedly they had them for over 5 weeks in there system. I can't confirm that cause they are out in Utah but the guy I got them from said he has never had any issues with people that have received this clownfish from him. He also said that most of the time the issues with shipping are because they get shipped from the Maldives(which is a helluva long way), to wholesalers then to LFS never having a chance to get over the initial stress. So far they are doing great and eating cyclop-eeze, that I figured I would try to give them.....I don't have the lights on yet either.....They have been in the tank for about 5 hours or so. So far all is good :)

The service department said that these Maldives were the first ones they have received in over a year. So I couldn't let it pass especially if they actually had them for 5 weeks.

Yeah, he's the smart one. Two degrees in 4 years a BA in Philosophy and BS in Health Sciences (pre-med)

I took 9 years for a BA at a public school so....

Should be more like BS in philosophy.....Philosophy always seem like a class that was more about how one can BS the rest into thinking you new what you were talking about on what ever subject was being discussed and how deep you could discuss it.....LOL.
Hey at least you got one, and that whats important not how long it took. There is definitely some hot chicks that go there....but most of them are smarter then you and that makes it difficult to fall for the come-Ons unless there are smart girl come-Ons, I just know the street girl come-Ons and those didn't work half the time either......Anyway...

These fish are really going after the cyclop-eeze, I have to go get some Mysis tomorrow we will see how they like that to.....

Thanks for the advice everybody....I do appreciate it

Don't know really it is kind of up to them. I would definitely try if they laid eggs. I am always up for an experiment and a challenge.I got one a little bigger and one smaller in hopes they would pair off, so it was kinda planned a bit.

I tried to house nigripes on 2 different occasions and to no avail. they are very hard to settle in, and are terrible shippers. by the way, mine ate hardy at first as well and then they just gave up...

good luck, and don't spoke em'...

Clown update,

Its day three and these fish are doing great they have control over the tank now and the psudochromis could care less if they are there. They eat like pigs and will eat as much as I give them, they have a tendency to hang out in the heavy current coming from one of my power heads that's hooked up to a wave maker...I have read that they do this in the wild too. So far things are looking great although they are still a little skittish, but the smaller one is getting braver by the day as far as being out when I'm in front of the tank...Thanks again for all your experiences.
