Finally an easy solution to bryopsis!

That doesn't look like any bryopsis I've seen before. It reminds me of a very unusual caulerpa that is in my junk tank. I don't know if I ever posted pictures of it on my site.
 
Tonight I am seeing more bryopsis turning clear. I am up to about 1590ppm now. I've been dosing tech m for one week, but at first I wasn't dosing enough until now I've been dosing the proper amount for the past 3 days and it's already showing improvement. We'll see what it looks like by the end of the week.

Looks like the picture was taken with flash, which makes it look different. I'm not sure what it is, could be bryopsis, maybe not. Would be easier to tell with a picture with no flash.
 
Here is a shot of some I pulled out. The normally feathery look is rather reggedy looking and the main stem is pretty withered looking. I am just wondering if anyone else has noticed the Bryopsis experience a sudden growth spurt when the Epsom Salt was added. The growth is unhealthy looking, but very sudden.

Here is some I just pulled out of the tank. If you look closely, you can see clear spots in the stalk and that the Bryopsis is missing many of its feathery tufts.

I think that is in the Caulerpa family. Here is a macro shot of some bryopsis, which I've rarely seen get anywhere near the lengths you've posted above.

I have beaten bryposis in the past.....actually using the remove rock and blow torch the **** out of it method...........but after a recent tank crash...it has popped up again in the tank. Only in a couple of patches and it isnt growing very fast since the initial burst.......

Anyway, I am trying this up the mag thing to see if i can kill it, but interestingly enough I found a unlikely fish who eats it. My niger trigger. LOL He wont eat it where it grows, but will scarf it down out of the end fo my long tweezers if I put it in front of him.

No piece there is longer than one inch, I just have it zoomed way in on the algae. And it normally has the same feathery look of bryopsis. It also only grows from a single point, and doesnt put down runners as it grows.

Do you have any pics of the caulerpa you are talking about?

I hope it is bryopsis and this treatment kills it. I tried cowries (arabian cowries) and a sea hare and neither would hardly touch the stuff.

Maybe I will just try the blowtorch method. In a week.
 
Yeah, I agree with Marc, I don't think that's bryopsis. As he said, bryopsis branches don't tend to get that long or thick. I think mine only reached about 2 inches long at most. That is possibly a kind of caulerpa.
 
I think my zoom was a little misleading on the last pic. Here is another for scale.

I just assumed it was Bryopsis. Kinda raggedy looking now, but it looked like bryopsis before. Never heard of a micro sized caulerpa before.

Arnold came back and so did the bryopsis. Starting the treatment again today. This time I will try to maintain the Mag levels at 1500 PPM and see what happens. I let it drop back to 1100 PPM. I will keep everyone posted.
 
I believe I have bryopsis in my reef tank, short, dark green patches of turf like algae on some of my rocks.
I'm going to start the Mg ++ treatment next week but before I do I have a couple of questions, 1) do I need to turn off my CR during the treatment, and 2) do I continue my monthly water changes during treatment or wait until the treatment is completed?

What's CR stand for? Are you sure your algae is bryopsis? I'd make sure by comparing to pictures of it in this thread before you start. Magnesium will have no effect on most other algae, including common hair algae. I'd continue with your normal water change routine during the treatment. Keep in mind that every time you do a water change, you'll have to add extra magnesium, as most (maybe all) salts are deficient in magnesium. I believe Instant Ocean mixes up to around 1100ppm magnesium, whereas normal ocean levels are around 1350ish, and you need about 1600+ to kill bryopsis.
 
"CR" is short for Calcium Reactor.

I would run everything as normal, and raise Magnesium as recommended if you are battling bryopsis. Kent Tech-M is the product that appears to work.

If you do a water change during this process, make sure you test and dose more Mg as needed.

Interesting thread.

Several years ago I had a bryopsis outbreak as well. I also accidently way overdose Mg during a waterchange and it disappeared over the next week.

I thought my excellent husbandry skills had destroyed it! :lol:
