Finally buying a new bigger house...

After 10 months of searching, probably saw over 100 open houses, and multiple failed bids...we are finally in escrow...crossing my fingers. (We had been in another escrow before and seller backed out on last day because the crazy owner wanted more $ and not pay her agent) The original plan was to find a bigger home in the OC close to work (my wife and I are commuting close to 40 miles 1 way from LA), but the home prices kept rising.

It got to a point where fixer uppers were close to a million dollars in nice neighborhoods. And we were getting beaten by cash buyers by 100k over list price on nice homes. We went way way above our original budget to get a home, and now we are going to be house poor.

Its crazy to pay everything you have saved for the last 15 years...on the down payment..and literally have nothing in the bank and have to borrow hundreds of thousands more from the bank. I don't even think I can set up a tank anymore until I save some money and figure out my finances. I was really looking forward to set up a bigger tank too... :(. I may need to sell some old gear I've been saving for a new tank...still holding out hope.

Yes sir and all of these high dollar houses come with even higher dollar property tax payments every year making it more painful to upgrade than ever. I think a lot of people forget that at 1% tax they will be paying $1,000 a month the rest of their life just for property taxes on that million-dollar house

As one of the younger, 31, guys in this discussion (maybe) I can't believe I can call my half million dollar home in San Diego a deal. Bought it 5 years ago and have no idea how I will be able to afford the next level home down here. Everything is at least 800-900 and those are the fixer uppers as stated by Jimbo.

Being born here is a blessing and a curse.

Unfortunately the only bigger money pit than reef aquarium ownership is home ownership. I learned my lesson.

This among other things. Did you hear about Gov Moonbeam signing the new water restrictions into law?

Water is a real concern...our population has doubled in the last 50 years without any sign of slowing down. We need to get smart about how we use our resources...just my 2 cent.

I would recommend spending money on water infrastructure as opposed to a bullet train to San Francisco that is over budget, and behind schedule. Not to mention will no do what voter's voted on (i/e being High speed). I mean considering we havent invested in a good reservour in many decades.
Not to mention the logistical/financial aspects of regulating how people use the water.

Also dont get me started on the Delta Smelt.

Wait till they come take your tank...

Residential water use makes up about 6% of state useage and about 80% of revenue.

The vast majority of water consumption is agricultural mega corporations that pay almost nothing for their water rights.

I believe almond farms are one of the biggest agricultural products that use tons of water made in ca which are exported to China. Ca is not producing as many cows due to regulations regarding cow farts. Look it up or listen to John and Ken.

Congrats and i feel you in the same boat just got a new place and realized just how many more monthly bills we picked up transitioning from a condo to a house. Just the fact that we have to pay a water bill in an area where water is more expensive is frustrating esp with all the water I make for wc and drinking. Guess just glad I can still put back up my 150 not even thinking about upgrading to 300+ anytime soon. Good luck!

I used to have a beautiful lawn. Now I have a 1/3 of a lawn with weeds and a bunch of dirt.

Congrats on the new house. Every new house deserves a new tank!

And to the rest of you guys....
Quit complaining about the cost of California housing. Lower housing costs in SoCal is an open invitation for more people to move here. LOL

Lol. The weather and food is awesome here, reasons why itโ€™s so expensive.
