finally decided to leave the hobby

after leaving my much anticipated dream 360gallon sps tank running as a FOWLR tank after over a year, ive decided im calling it quits.
the demands of keeping a large full blown sps tank are a bit too much for me to handle with all my other hobbies and other priorities..haha
its a shame cuz this setup was really never fully setup, i had big plans for it and have sunk a lot of money and time into it.

those times of being sps addicted were something else where nothing else mattered except finding the best sps corals out there. id drive all over the bay area just for a measly frag and drop anything i was doing.
im sure everyone goes through this but i just dont look at these things like i used to and therefore, have lost interest in the hobby. hopefully(or maybe not) ill have the drive to get back into sps like many of those who have left and come back. it was fun times supplying frags to a bunch of ppl and getting lots in return.

anyhow, ill be posting a bunch of the items for sale within the next week or so, so stay tuned.

this will include my 360gallon and 4x3x1 prop tank and a bunch of the equipment.

Will you ship any of it? If so please post here and I may buy some stuff. Thanks and sorry you are leaving.

Congrats on being able to move on from this hobby, Alex. Some of us aren't as fortunate (raises hand)

You should just hold a 2-day bowling tournament for all your stuff. $100 entry fee, and everybody wins something:p

freed, id prefer selling locally to avoid shipping obviously. heavy items like ballast, pumps, pendants are best sold locally.

sang, definitely ill be back but not anytime soon. ill probably setup something that is more manageable, like a 4x3x2 or 5x3x2. iremember u took a long break and came back with the vengeance so there is hope for me. lol

karl, only thing is i would enter the tourny also and then end up winning everything back so that wouldnt work out.

theo, ill live vicariously through your reef tank.

Are you going to sell any SPS?? :D

haha...id only quit if i were at a low with this hobby. in other words if i had a nice full blown sps gold mine reef id probably still be in the hobby. after i got rid of my 200 gallon i never really had a chance or really the motivation to restart. lots of the stuff ended in friends tanks and stores.

now, what i do with my fish that i love dearly is another question.

oooh, that sucks! maybe one day you'll be back into it. let me know about the frag tank! =) i'm interested

Sad to see you leave, but I fully understand what you are saying. The $$ spent on our setups could go a long ways in other areas of our lives :). We are working on setting up the new 380, and just the lighting alone will be enough to draw a tear, which is also why we still have not bought any of it yet :)

Best of luck to you in your future endeavors and hopefully we will see you back in a couple of years :)

Alex,

Are you serious? Screw it. I quit too.

It's kinda funny, but reefing went into a lull when you stopped keeping acros. It hasn't been the same since. You definitely added some excitment too finding the nicest corals and propogating them. I hope most of the SPS crowd appreciates your hard work. :)

Man, leave the forums for a weekend, and everyone quits :(

It's very sad to see you go Alex, you did add quite a bit of fun to the SPS collecting, whilst you were doing it :D

Sang, I forgot the J/K part. I'm not quiting. If Jesus or Jason quit, then my maybe I will. :D Besides, my wife will cut me down if I dropped out now.

It really hasn't been the same since Alex dropped out of the acro scene. First Alex drops the acro scene and Aquascene closes. Now this? There ain't nothing to believe in. :)

Sang, Whitie's did sell all of their black tangs before you called, so they were telling you the truth.

yeah maybe the sps collectability aspect dying is purely coincidence or maybe not. what i noticed though was that the influx of aquaculture indo really spoiled it for the hardcore collector. rather than finding only a couple nice corals out of a shipment, we were spoiled with tons of crazy acros that were for the longest time difficult to find. remember the days of the 1st purple tort, purple bonsai, original soli, even a hot pink mill..etc, those came in on a limited basis from the solomons and indo, etc...shoot..brightly colored bali sps are a dime a dozen these days and really nothing surprises me anymore and usually when u see a nice aquaculture u know that another 100 of them were distributed at the same time...haha i was talking about this with tubs around the time i started losing interest in sps. it got real boring fast and killed the exclusivity and rare aspect of sps collecting.

You're right, Alex. The emergence of aquacultured SPS not only impacted some of the exclusivity of certain collectible pieces, but also brought forth a slew of maladies that made the whole genre of SPS keeping even more difficult than it already was:(

Fortunately, there's still a strong presence of haut monde reefers (like Sang and Hector) that still drive rare SPS keeping. We just need more people like you, John, Rommel, Matt, etc., who have 'a good eye' for picking out the truly unusual.
