Finally figured out why I had HLLE in my tank...

A few of my fish in the last four or so months had developed some HLLE in my 220g. No stress, no overcrowding/over feeding, parameters within range. I couldn't figure it out...added selcon to food, varied their diet, added a ground probe and a nitrate reactor...still no noticeable difference. Well today I go to my sump room and discover my skimmer and half of my reactors and heaters are off. I have a Vertex IN-280 that I got from marinedepot last fall and the thing skims like a champ. Never any complaints. Anyways, check the plug and reset the power strip. Turns back on and works for about 30 seconds before shutting off again along with flipping the breaker to the whole room. This can't be good...Pull the pump out, clean it off, reassemble, works for 2 minutes and shuts off. Can not figure out why...finally I pull off the plastic pump cover with a screw driver and find this...

So anyways now my skimmer is down until I get a new pump. I believe this pump is a Sedra 5000 but I need to look it up on the Vertex website. Any suggestions for a replacement pump? I was thinking a BubbleBlaster maybe? I called marinedepot and they put me in touch with the supplier for a replacement but I am not holding my breath. So anyways current has been leaking into my system for who knows how long at this point. Just glad I caught it before anything more serious happened.

ya, because freshwater guys use the vortex skimmer regularly. Why would marinedepot sell a skimmer with a pump that is not saltwater safe??? Obvious oversite....

So to update...never heard back from the marine depot contact person. Ordered a $89 replacement pump from Salty Critter this afternoon, it will be here Friday. I really like the Vertex skimmers but never would have bought the 2nd generation model if I knew they had pump issues. Looks like they have stopped using Resun pumps in their 3rd generation lines as all the 2nd generation skimmers are discontinued at most online dealers including MarineDepot. Shopped the BubbleBlaster 5000 as well to replace the broken pump...retails for $225, almost more than I paid for the entire skimmer new last year! Stock pump will have to do for now..I am planning on upgrading to a bigger tank in the near future anyways and getting a Bubble King.

I have one of those, I used to use in in my sump but got 2 new Rio 1800's and replaced those. The one I have left is in my salt/water mixing barrel in my garage. Now I will need to keep an eye on that.

Sorry that happened to you.

That is Crazy!! Glad you found your problem, and I hope things work out for you now. My two tangs had a little HLLE, I've been dosing Selcon and VitaChem in there food for a while now and they appear to be doing much better.

Glad I could share the info...from the posts on RC and dedicated Vertex skimmer club threads I figured a lot of people ran these skimmers so I wanted others to be aware. Never hurts to check at least with these Resun pumps.

The selcon seems to help. The only fish that it is really noticeable on is the Purple tang. I'm hoping a few more months of good conditions will further it's improvement.
