Finally Upgraded-Pics Included!!!

SOME of the damage they caused!

SOME of the damage they caused!

As you can see in the next few images, for the most part they only attacked the tips of the SPS. In a few instances they also worked on the base.

Oddly though, my Pavona & Porcillepora frags were untouched.

The exception!

The exception!

This was one of the few pieces that they ate not only the tips, but around the base as well.

Another exception!

Another exception!

This was another one that was attacked at the tips and base. I had alrady cut and re-mounted the frag before taking this picture, removing the damaged base.

As it looks now!

As it looks now!

Here is the final aquascape now. There is a couple frags that are not in their permanent place yet, but this gives you an idea of how the overall picture is going to look.

I have to tell you I am VERY worried about the damage done to the frags. Combined with the starfish and stress of being moved, my concern is a steady decline in at least a few of their health.

I have bumped up the flow in the tank considerably, and also been running some carbon to help get the water crystal clear as fast as I can.

I have considered going ahead and fraging the healthy branches ( just in case ) but am trying to wait it out till the last possible moment, to see if they can recover on their own.

Here is how it looked tonight.
And on a completely un-related subject. No SB makes it much much easier to take pictures under 20K lamps.

I will get a good clear shot in a few weeks to document the recovery process, but for now here is a semi-crisp shot.

Great pics! The new aquascaping is amazing.

Can I ask you something about the acros that got eaten by the stars? Were the polyps at the tips of the branches that were affected still there? Or did they eat everything including the polyps?

That looks good. Hopefully the frags will recoverer fairly easily and quickly.

Thanks a lot!

Yup lookin' really good. Love the aquascapin' this time around just as much as the first. Whats your secret?

Just planning I guess! I try to fit the pieces together in my head first and get an overall idea of how I want the whole thing to look. Then I sit on the floor with the pieces, and work with them finding the best fit ( yet keeping it stable ) and a little while later, there it is. It wasnt always that easy, when I first started in this hobby it would literally take me weeks to get just a couple pieces the way I wanted them. I owe a lot of it to the rocks themselves, this mix of Kaelini & Carib is great for making an open interesting aquascape.

On 2 of them it looked like it was just the tissue around the polyps, on the others it was polyp and all. I should note that the ones where the polyps were left were the last ones attacked. That leaves me to believe that given time the polyps would have been eaten on them as well. I just stopped it before it progressed that far.

Well, I have those too, and never have I seen them anywhere near my SPS. They seem to hang out in the sump and refugium, and almost always on the glass.

The small cone (or pointy mountain) looking items are keyhole limpets and are safe. They'll devour algae. I've got tons of those little babies in my system. They never seem to grow larger though.

One more question about the starfish...what color are they? I have ones that look like them, but they are all white.

I know the Limpets are safe, the few you see in the cup are the unfortunate victims of being to close to a starfish. I would have agreed with you Marc about the starfish, but seeing them on the SPS eating it as they go along changed my mind fast. Keep in mind I have had theses in the system from the beginning, and then suddenly they started eating them.

Youââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢re talented man. Your aquascaping is beautiful before and after.

Again, thanks a lot!!

what color are they? I have ones that look like them, but they are all white.

Theses were white with a brownish pattern around the central disk, and light grey on the underside.

Wow the new BB setup looks great...If I may ask what type
of LR is that?

Hope the toe is healing well...

Thanks, I am very happy with the look also.

Its a mix of Kaelini & Carib.

Coming attractions!

Coming attractions!

Well,

Figured I would post an update on the BB switch. Everything is running great, and I love the new look a lot!

I ended up losing the Miami Orchard and a Milli ( I think between being eaten from the tips down combined with the stress of moving around during the BB switch was just too much for them ), the other Millie that was in such bad shape has completely encrusted over the bare tips again, and is doing great!

So far I have not seen anymore of the starfish, I am sure there is a couple that I overlooked during the process, but my eyes are peeled for them.

Tomorrow I am ordering an auto topoff unit to help keep the systems salinity more stable ( even though there is not much fluctuation now )

I am also going to ditch the 20K XM's and give their 10K brothers a try. I have liked the 20's since the beginning, but they seem to have lost a lot of their intensity over the last week. So the acclimation process will start for the drastic change in PAR as soon as I get them.

I will finally get some better quality pictures of the whole layout once all is in place.

Hold off on the change in lighting. As you might have noticed from other bare bottom threads that use starboard, the bounce-back lighting is rather intense and you'll end up with more PAR than you might think. Let your corals adjust to this change before switching to 10,000K bulbs.

Yes I considered this.

But I didnt use starboard, I ended up painting the underside of the bottom pannel black.

I Think that even though there will be a considerable higher PAR, that the black will help to absorb some of the bounce back, and there wont be as much of a problem.
