Finally Upgraded-Pics Included!!!

Just a heads up, I use the 100 micron bags but I leave the top of the bag open so if it becomes clogged it will just spill over in to the sump. That way I can be lazy and not have a flood on my hands.

Glad to hear it wasn't too bad, tank looks great by the way. Also, you may want to look at the SEIO pumps instead of the maxijets. They push a ton of water but with a very soft flow pattern and very low electrical usage.

Todd,

Thanks for the advice, thats exactly what I did.

I am hoping that the Maxijets are temp. as I am going to incorporate another smaller magdrive into the loop at some point very soon.

I like micron bags since they trap detritus, but I do get annoyed by having to maintain them. It seems like I'm always cleaning them out...

Amen to that. It seems I'm constantly changing them out. If someone came up with another way to polish your water/trap detrius that required no maintenance and was cheap I would buy it in a second. I have three of them and rotate each week but it's still a pain.

Leviathan,

Read through the whole thread, your 90 looks cool. I have the 75g version the the megaflow. Itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s my first RR tank, so I canââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t compare it to anything, but I really donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t like the overflow because it protrudes into the tank quite a bit and IMO uses a lot of space. You have 65lb of rock in a 90g (plus water in sump) ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ thatââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s a lot less than the 1-1.5lb people usually recommend. By comparison, I have 95lb in my 75. (Maybe thatââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s why Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m complaining about the lack of space). Anyway, whatââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s your rationale for less rock? I have all mine in there hoping to keep nitrates out (but they're always 5 or so).

I use a MAG 9.5, and have a MJ1200 on each side of the tank behind my rock, so I wasnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t surprised when you did the same.

Regarding the micron bags, I don't use anything. When I designed my system, I planned on using a filter sock, and something discouraged me, saying it would trap pods, plankton, and other beneficial stuff. So, I don't use anything like that, and surprisingly the tank is pristine, no detritus blowing around.

I do have a small amount of micro bubbles, but I can live with it. I have a baffle-less sump which is probably the main reason why.

Anyway, keep updating this thread, it's a good one.

My main reason for using the amount of rock in the display that I did, was 65 lbs was enough to put it plainly. The old rule of thumb that most use saying 1-2lbs per gallon really isnt accurate IMHO. It isnt the amount of weight that helps the filtration, its the amount of surface area on the rocks. Therefor if the rock you have is very porus you have to worry less about the total weight. I have never been one to fill my tanks all the way up with rocks. I just have never liked the appearence of it. To me 65 was a perfect amount with the mix of Kaelini & Carib. I used. I will at some point add probally about 15-20lbs more into the sump but at this point I am in no real big hurry.

Reguarding the micron bags, the ONLY reason I use one is the micro bubbles that my drain causes. I have three of them that ( usually with the above exception ) I change out every three to 5 days. It has the added benifit of stopping the slight gurgling sound the drain was causing, with it no bubbles at all and dead silent.

I at first was worried about the overflow,,,especially in this new AGA design, but to tell you the truth, after painting the back black it next to vanished and it really didnt impair my aquascape in the least. In fact I found it to be a usefull tool to help keep the rocks off the back glass as much as possible.

Well its been 2 months since my last update so figured I would share the current progress to date.

Not to much inhabitant wise has changed.
Currently my frag list consists of:

Green Monti dig
Purple Monti dig
Pink Monti cap
Purple rim/green Monti cap
Blue tip Acro
Green Acro
Blueish/green Pavona
Bright orange Monti dig
Pink Cat's Paw

A orange Fungia from my old 75 gallon
and my gold Squamosa ( also from my old system )

I have been trying to just let things get a foothold and begin to grow. One thing I have stuck to is patience in my stocking of this system. I decided not to long ago that with the exception of the Fungia, no other coral will be added that is not SPS.

I finally decided on what to do to add some more flow. After thinking on it long and hard I decided that the MJ1200's didnt look as bad as I had thought they did in the beginning. So today I added a third and put them all on a Natural Wave wavemaker, set on a 30 second pulse. I am VERY happy with the chaotic/increased flow that has been accomplised by this new hardware addition.

I will be taking some updated pictures in the next couple days and posting them.

As it is now, I will probally wait a few more weeks before my next frag order.

Anyhow thats how it stands to date, stay tuned for pics soon.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for new pictures! Glad to see this thread got re-born . Sorry to hear about your sick puppy as well :(. I'm a dog person myself (if it isn't blatently obvious :D) and always hate to hear about sick pups. Not to get off thread topic, but what breed is the pup?

Thanks for the responses.

K9 he was a 6 year old Chiuahah, that was determined to have congestive heart failur several months ago. He lost the battle with it and died in my arms a month ago on the 13th. I had had him since he was 5 weeks.

Very sorry to hear about the loss :(. They sure are cute little buggers too. Unfortunately, CHF always has a poor prognosis for recovery. My mom lost her last cat to the same thing.

At least you still have that nice tank going to help keep your spirits up! Hang in there and focus your energy on the tank and it will help keep you happy (and busy!). Take care.

I was curious about your substrate. I think it looks like sand, but I can't really tell from the pics. What type was it? I am looking for sand for my 125, but I can't decide on a type or an amount. I really like the amount of sand ou have in there, so I was thinking about doing something like yours plus 50%.

Thanks,
Alex.

swegyptian,

That is 40 lbs. of Carib. sea sand, which gives me aprox 1" coverage across the entire bottom, if I were to spread it evenly out.

Plus I finally ( at least for the moment ) got my micro bubble problem completely under control.

What caused your microbubble problem and how did you end up controlling it?

Mr_Quality

Mine was caused by the drain, the force of the water going into the sump was really stirring things up. The bubbles caused by the force of the water had no time to disipate before the return pump got ahold of them and sent them back into the display.

My solution was using a 100 micron filter bag installed on the drain. I have three of them that i use in rotation, they completely got rid of the bubbles virtually instantly.
