I hope you feel better soon. :(

Thanks Marc!

I will hopefully find out some more info after the test I am having tue.

Sorry...but what's a "wet skim?"

Its producing a more liquid skimmate, giving less time for organics to break down in the system. You will find most BB systems use this process, instead of the normal dry skimming.

Just found your thread this morning. Nice work and great shots of the tank. I didn`t have a chance to read the whole thing *just had time to skim the pic`s*. Gonna click the subscripe button and check back later.

Thanks, I will check out your thread as well.

Added 25 lbs more rock the other day, mix of carib. & kalien sp? as before. The aquascape is really coming together like I had invisioned it. I think 20 lbs more will finish it off, which I will probally add in 2 weeks.

I will be upgrading to dual 250's also next month.

Plus I finally ( at least for the moment ) got my micro bubble problem completely under control.

Below is a shot from this evening.

Levathan, this aquascape here inspired mine, particularly the stack on the right

new2u,

Thanks, I am glad that you found some inspiration in the early aquascape layout.

UPDATE

One of my Seio's failed on me yesterday. I turned it off to move it to another spot, and it never came back on.

Needless to say I am upset by this, I intend too contact the man. and request a replacement.

I am using 2 MJ1200's in its place for the time being.

I have been following along and am glad that you got rid of the red bugs. That is good. Did Marc ever treat his tank or not? I dont think so???
I have heard of people having problems with the Seio pumps not restarting after unplugging them. Did you try and take it apart or perhaps soak/run it for 10 minutes in a vinegar solution? That may help.
The Tunzes are much nicer and more reliable but are lots of $$$$ :)

So then Marc what is your opinion on the red bugs that you have? Are they causing significant damage to your corals or not really? Is your tank just large enough that you can let the pest kinda compete with the corals some? Please forgive my ignorant questions if they are... I would like to trade frags and keep SPS corals in the future but these bugs have me a bit concerned.
If you are mainly worried about your pods then could you remove lots of your LS and place it temporarily in a different tank and replace it after the meds are removed?

Actually there wasnt anything wrong with it to start with.

I meant to post about it but in my semi-loopy state forgot.

There was a small cerith snail that got wedged into the impeller, once I removed it everything worked fine.

I only saw them on a couple of corals, and they were either returned to Nathan when his tank was ready (in Atlanta) or they perished in my tank. I've had bigger issues to deal with, frankly.

Treating your tank for red bugs can kill other crustaceans, including shrimp, acro crabs, and more. There are a few threads on this topic in the SPS Keepers forum. You should review those if you are needing the input.

Thanks but not really "needing" the input. Just very curious and like to learn new things. My tank doesnt have any bugs of any kind yet (it is still in the garage and without any water) :)
You just seem very knowledgeable and I wanted to see what, if anything you have done with your tank on the Red Bug front. I have studied your website intently when only a neophyte reefer and I guess I could be considered a fan. :)
Ok enough @&$ kissing for one day.

Well,

Looks like just when you think everything is back on track, better think again.

I awoke this morning to a dead clam. Thats right, my 5 year old gold Squamosa which looked fine last night mysteriously died after the lights went out.

After testing everything I come up at a loss!

This has been the most failed system I have ever setup. I go back through my own personal tank log and see a pattern of mysterious deaths for no apparent reason at all. ALL of my tests come back showing that my water quality is fine, yet the death toll of the things going into this system continues to climb.

I am really at a loss, and at this point am considering seriously taking the whole system apart.

I NEVER had problems like this with my 75 gallon mixed system. Nor in a 55 gallon I had setup for a little over a year. This system however has been nothing but trouble since the start.

I have REALLY tried to keep a positive outlook on things, but I have really had it.

There is no measurable/apparent reason for the failure rate I am having, and with inhabitants I have keep for years previously.

It just dosent add up, and I really dont know what to do anymore!

Sorry to hear that, I just lost my first clam recently that I had from December 2003, it just sucks and I feel your pain. The stupid Queen Conch knocked him over all the time recently and I think he had just been turned upside down to often to like it. He still seemed fine and would open up, maybe not as much as he use to but still seemed ok. Then one day, the fish were nipping at his flesh when I woke up, he was a goner that quick. I even have my nitrates down now in the 5 to 10ppm range and the calcium is at 440ppm, so I think it was the just the conch bugging him to much.

Are you maybe going to get another, I was thinking on a Crocea near the top of my tank but have not found the right one yet.

Argh! :sad1: I can relate.

How often do you do water changes?

10 gallons every other weekend.

rjwilson37,

At this point I just dont know, this is really the last thing I needed to happen with everything going on Hospital wise.

I honestly dont understand what the problem is. Its not an isolated event either. From the beginning this system has been plagued. Something is just not right, and I am thinking that starting completely over might be the only solution. At the same time I struggle with if doing so will actually even make a difference. I have even considered going back to what always seemed to work in the past. I had a thriving 75 gallon SPS/LPS/Soft/Clam system for years and EVERYTHING did great. The only major difference is the 75 wasnt BB, and I did monthly 10 gallon WC's. Aside from that the basic setup is identical.

Really frustrated right now.

I hope things get better for you, how long has this new system been up and running now?

My system is doing pretty well, but I am looking into a 100g that has the same dimensions as my 55g only it is 5ft long instead of 3ft long. I don't want to be plagued with problems either and was thinking on going with 1" of LS subtrate rather than the 3" of sand I have now.

I have almost zero experience with barebottom tanks, but for the most part it is designed for massive flow, wet skimming and detritus removal regularly.

A DSB or SBB might be a good option for your particular case. One of the things we've been discussing about my tank is Organics levels and using Ozone to reduce them. Nitrates aren't an issue, with them staying around 3-5ppm all the time.

Keep in mind, clam die just like you described. Overnight, for no reason at all. It might have just be its time, after 5 good years. Most can't do that. I've not done it. My oldest was 2 years, and it killed me when I lost it.

I know you are seeing a pattern, and it could very well be one, or maybe it is a series of coincidences. I'm not keeping a death list of my stuff, and work hard to keep what I have alive.

Hey Leviathan,

Got any pics of your rubbermaid sump? What's the benefit of using that instead of a drilled tank?

rjwilson37,

Thanks, I am trying to keep a continued positive outlook its just starting to get hard. The system has been set up since march of last year.

Marc,
Actually I was starting to think along thoses lines. You are right 5 years is a while to have this guy. Its just frustrating to see it die before youir eyes, literally in a matter of hours for no reason.

Like I said since I went BB, I do 10 gallon WC's every other week, siphon every week though, wet skim, and keep have about 40x turnover.

Andraska,
I dont have one handy at the moment, but I will see what I can do. Honestly it was no real benifit, just a bit less expensive.

Marc, you run a DSB or SSB?

I have run both and had very good sucess with each. I am not saying that running BB is the problem here. My trates are U/D as are p04 levels, my Ca is pretty steady at the 450 mark, and my Alk or DKH is at 8,,I brought it down from running at 10 long ago, it stays more stable when I do. My mag levels are at 1300, and salinity at 35ppm. My temp is a consistant 78-79.

Thats why I am really confused as to my fatality rate in this system. In all honesty I was not very diligent at theses levels in my 75, had a really crap skimmer, feed much more heavily, never ran carbon, yet it was a thriving sucess on all fronts( SPS/LPS/Softies/& Clams ). Its almost like I am starving my current system.

Everyne is talking theses days about ultra low nutrient systems, and that is what I have tried to create in this current setup, unlike my previous systems. The only thing I didnt do is cook my rocks, but being brand new LR I thought it was pointless.

Maybe starved systems are not for everyone, and are in fact a detriment <sp to keeping a healthy system. To a certain extent. I dont think flooding a tank with high ammounts of food will benifit either. I dont know, grasping at straws I guess in my frustration, and the drugs they have me on arent helping at the moment either!
