firm believer haveing a good skimmer

one i started my 40 gallon breeder tank i had a tunze nano skimmer hooked up it did ok but way to small for the tank.then i got a free red sea skimmer hooked it up worked ok one day next day nothing or overflowing.i was always told to get a good skimmer never reallly wanting to believe or wanting to fork out hundreds of dollors for one.i found a used euro reef skimmer for cheap hooked up a sedra 5000 pump up to it and whamo.the stuff this thing pulls out is crazy and the smell of this s*** makes ya want to gag smells like rotton eggs.i could never would image what my tank would be with out it.i will never go the cheap way again on the skimmer for the tank.

That smell is something awful. I have to empty in the basement, since my wife can't stand the lingering smell.

My skimmer is in the bedroom and happens to be one selling with the wife on converting the laundry room to a sump room. That stuff STINKS.

Yeah skimmate is some nasty stuff. I just hooked up a DIY waste collection container which uses a vent with activated carbon. There use to be lots of complaints about the "fishy" smell since my tank is in the living room... now you can literally sniff right about the vent on the container, and you can't smell a thing.

I would definitely recommend it if your tank is somewhere where a noticeable smell can cause problems. Although I can't offer any advice about emptying the container/collection cup. I don't think there is any way to avoid that sickness. :lol:

You get what you pay for most of the time in this hobby. Skimmers have come quite a way since the old air stone jobs. The big factors to weigh are ease of maintenance and power consumed and of course the size of your wallet? I wish more people were educated and listened to the point that cheap skimmers are giant headaches.

what i seen to in my tank is that my corals seem to be doing alot better my zoos are multiplying i see new ones popping up all the time my sps corals are doing way better my green birdsnest i had just two little branches from a frag and now there must be 5 or six more branches comming off them everything justs seems happier now.does that sound weird
