Bought this today. Its my first SPS purchase. Anyway it came away from the rock it was attached to so I've just poked it into a hole in a rock for now. What is it and how fragile are they? If is gets knocked when its small will it simply snap off? Also is this what people call bleached? It looked a different colour in the shop, more blue than white on the tips

Hi Jason, another Perthite hey !.

Mate the coral looks fine and poking it in to a crevice is fine.
Where did you get it from ?

It has not bleached. If it had it would be white.

It looks a bit like a Blue Tip Staghorn but I couldnt be sure.

They do "snap" quite easily however you would need to give it a
fair whack to break it.

If you do break it you have created your first frag !.

Good Luck

David

Your lighting is probably different at the store. It is browned out, and if you treat it good, it will color up to what I am guessing to be a dark green with blue tips.

Corals often come into the stores looking these "pastel" colors because they are starved for light and have lost their coloration.

Stress, overfeeding, low light will cause the browning. Over time it will adjust to your tanks water quality and lighting and if optimal will reflect that.

SPS are very pretty, but very finicky.......keep asking questions.......and learn about dipping and QT'ing them as there are some nasty parasites that has caused people to tear down the tanks in the past because they got into them.

Could you point me in the direction of some good reading on dipping and QT'ing? I don't have a QT yet (space is an issue) but working on the wife for another part of the house. I have 3 x 150MH and 6 x 35W blue lights (still don't really know what these are???) Would that be enough or do I need more?
