First anemone

I just got my first anemone its is a BTA it is really small about the size of a dollar
What should I be looking for to make sure it is doing ok?
also I had some trouble getting him to stuck on to my rock it took about 10 min of him floating around before he would stay put on the rock I put him on is this normal?

how long did you acclimate it for. What size tank and lighting.

I acclimated it for about 2 hours
its a 20gal
65w pc 50/50

Thats happened to me. From the many experiences i have had, its very hard to keep a small anemone alive, even with perfect params and lighting.


And until it finds a rock it wants to settle down on it will move.

Put it under a basket (like the kind strawberries come in) with a piece of rock, or it may get stuck in a powerhead/overflow.

Could be. It sometimes happens from stress. You could wind up with two BTAs. IT is also possible that there is a problem as well. Just leave it be, keep an eye on it, and hope for the best.

sounds like its stressed. they do that. Some people do it on purpose but its not encouraged.

just be aware if it is that small and is going to spilit they may both die be sure to feed it every couple of days and i hope you have good lighting

how long has the tank been setup? what lighting do you have on it?

mine looked like it was splitting then it died. Be careful and watch vigilantly to see what happens. Also 65w of pc may be a bit low for an anenome IMO.

never mind I got no clue what its doing its not looking to good I wish I could get a pic but its hard to get a pic with the glare coming off of it i think i might try to bring it back to the store . bad idea trying to keep one of these things

Yeah 65w of pc really isnt enough light. I had one in a 20g with 185w and it did alright. It really didnt show any bulbs while it was in there. Once I moved it into my 55g with 300w of HQI and 130w PC actinics It bulbed up nice and is growing. I would take it back until you have a better lighting fixture.

It's not looking TOO bad.. need a more clear shot of the mouth. Is the mouth closed or open? If open, is it gaping? Gaping mouth is a sign of poor health and stress.

Run some carbon, keep those paramaters stable and in check. If possible, put him closest to the surface of the water receiving the most light possible. Keep flow moderate, just a gentle flow on the tentacles.

You may have a fighting chance with it...

Is it tightly closed? It should look puckered up, real tight. If it is, that's a good thing . Is it constantly inflating/deflating still? Usually this is normal acclimation reaction, but if it continues I'd keep a close eye on him.

Like I said, keep water paramaters stable and in check. Stability is key. Get him into as much light as possible, while maintaining a moderate flow (gently blowing the tentacles). BTA's like to plant their foot into cracks in the rock, so if you have a rock with a decent size "hole" in it, place him in there and he may just attatch.

IME, if you place these anemones in places that they are normally found, they tend to stay put.. they may wander a few inches, that's life.. but if you place them in a high flow, shady area... chances are they won't be too happy. So common sense can save you a lot of grief.

Anyways, it doesn't seem (or sound..) to be doing too bad, just keep an eye on it and keep those paramaters in check and stable.. I cannot stress that point enough.

i moved him on to the glass where he will get a bunch of light he was on the galss in the lfs when i got him so he must not mind it earlyer i had fed him some krill and he just tossed it up and hes not stickey he can hardley hold on to the food i give him,ill work on em
