First attempt at rearing fry

A couple of weeks ago I started a post regarding my clown's first spawn.

A month later and I believe I was able to get a couple of fry past metamorphosis. This first attempt is more successful than I thought it was going to be. considering all the mishaps that occurred.

First, the night of the hatch I managed to catch 16 fry before I had to run out with my daughter to the ER. By the time they diagnosed a stomach bug and I got back home all the other fry where gone.

Second, my father in-law fed the fry a bunch of pellets because he thought they were hungry. By the time I got home from work and found the food the water was foul. I did a 100% water change. I lost 5 that night.

Every thing looked good until about the Friday/Saturday. I guess they were starting metamorphosis and 9 of the remaining 11 dropped. 2 days later I'm left with 2 fry. One is a speeding demon. It darts all over the place. The other is not as quick. I think that one has not gone through meta or it might be on it's way out.

Anyway...I will get to try again this Wednesday or Thursday.

Here are some pics. Today they are 9 days old and are starting to eat TDO Chroma boost A

This one is the one that I think has not gone through meta

I think this one did.

Man, I feel you! and I'm following your thread. It seems that anything that can go wrong, does... right?.. You hear that all the time in this hobby, but in my limited experience in breeding so far, it seems it's even more true than with general reef keeping. I guess that's how we learn. :)

Glad to hear your daughter only had a stomach bug, and I assume she's okay now.

You gonna have to put a big sign up above your fry tank, 'DON'T FEED the fish!'

BTW, I was able to combine my single guy from my first batch with my 2nd batch (12 days difference) without any adverse affects other than the fact that it set the older guy back on his weening/feed schedule to prepared foods. Sounds like your guys are already eating prepaired foods, though - so you may want to keep them separated until after meta.

I have another tank ready for the new fry. I'm getting ready to add a sponge filter to the older fry's tank since they are eating prepared food.

How long did it take for your eggs to hatch? This is the second batch but my female ate all the eggs the first time and I'm left with 10 and its been 9 days since she laid them...they're silverish and I can see eyes

For me they are hatching on the 7th day and the 8th, but from what I'm read on here the hatch time frame is driven by your tank's temp.
I had split hatches too. On the 7th some hatched and the rest hatched the following day. That might be your case.

Hmmm the temp did go down a little...had a cold front and my tank is always at 80 I'm wondering if that messed them up..guess I'll find out soon enough! I've read if batches not hatching at all...hopefully tht doesn't happen

I'm not attempting to keep this batch I'm still getting more info and getting my rotifer culture down before I try...at least u have 2!

I waited a week for my culture to mature before trying my first batch.
I ordered my rotifers from reeds and the filter thing they sell. I'm also using rgcomplete to feed the rotifers.
Curious to hear what the experience Breeders feel about feeding brine shrimp.

Well mine hatched n have disappeared...guessing they either we're eaten or got sucked into the filter..u think I should wait a little longer before harvesting the rotifers? Also I read a lot of posts of a culture crashing..have any idea what that is? How do u know if they're alive? Also, when do u start feeding baby brine cause I should prob get a set up started unless there's something else anyone recommends...this forum is so helpful l! Glad I found it!

u think I should wait a little longer before harvesting the rotifers? I started harvesting on the third day
Also I read a lot of posts of a culture crashing..have any idea what that is? You feed too much or not enough and the animals die
How do u know if they're alive? You can use a microscope to look at them. You can also put some in a clear container and you can see them move. Another way is by looking at the water color. If the water is changing from green to clear then they are eating.
Also, when do u start feeding baby brine cause I should prob get a set up started unless there's something else anyone recommendsI was reading that some do it after metamorphosis. Some skip it all together

Pair. In this picture the female was still changing from male to female.

Here is my original female before she jumped.

That sucks about the heater. I have mine hooked up to my Apex. I don't want to take any chances.

What part of NJ are you from? I'm from Clifton.
