First crocea clam

I just wanted to post a picture of my first clam which happens to be a crocea. I have it under 2 250w Metal Halides. Pheonix 14k bulbs

agreed, very nice.... im not sure if you had planned on it, but crocea like to be on a rock or crevice, or somewhere where they can attatch themselves. This also makes them less vulnerable to predators, i.e. fireworms.... so, IMO, i would move it up on a rock ledge....

I tried to put it on a rock, but it kept pushing itself off into the sand. I stuck it in betwenn two rocks so I think it may be able to attach to one of them. I just don't want it to attach to a large rock as it will be difficult to move the clam when I move.

put a piece of tock under the clam, wait couple days for it to attach itself to the rock, then move it up to the rockworks. Very beautiful clam btw.

Maybe I'll try it again now that the clam is more use to my tank and it's parameters. Thanks for the compliments, and advice.

Where do you think that a good place for my clam would be? Right now the clam is located where the red circle is.

Very nice clam!..Here's a picture of my first crocea..I just burried it in the sand, they somehow find a spot they like..when they do..they fully open..So IMO..any flat spot in the sand will do..

sweet clam. So if my clam is open you wouldn't suggest me moving it, because if it is happy, then it is open?

i would move it up, crocea's live on rock in nature, so even though he may be open, he will feel more at home and get more light higher up. If you had 400w, then maybe it would be ok to keep it lower. The question is are you trying to make the clam as happy as you can, or do you want to have him where you want him to be.

I disagree with ireef. Just being open does not mean the clam is in a good spot. I have had a crocea open inside a bag on the way home from the lfs. I don't think it would have liked staying in there, though his mantle was extended. These clams are routinely out of water at reef tops, exposed to full daylight. Why would you not want to give the clam the best home possible outside of the top of a reef? i would move it up, crocea's live on rock in nature, so even though he may be open, he will feel more at home and get more light higher up. If you had 400w, then maybe it would be ok to keep it lower. The question is are you trying to make the clam as happy as he can be (read- as much light as possible), or do you want to have him where you want him to be?

If he appears to be happy then let him be. The more you move him, the more stessed he will become. :)

If you decide to keep him on the substarte, then I would recommend placing a flat rock about 1/8 to 1/2" under him so that he can grab it, if not he will continue to dig until he reaches the bottom of the tank. ;)

does it mean anything if my clam has started to change colors? It use to be a very vibrant blue and now it is starting to turn purple.. With vibrant blue edges. Seems like the grey lines are showing more too. I'm going to move him higher tonight and then we'll see what happens.
