my qt is up and running. what's a good starter fish? i have a plate, a mushroom, a gsp a brain and a candy cane. standard CUC, w/ peppermint shrimp.

i'd imagine that it would be good to start w/ fish that can take frozen food.

i think i would like to eventually have a clown, but don't *really* have specific requirements as to what type of fish to house.

Avoid damsels. It will be a huge PIA in the *** when you try to remove him later. And trust me, that day will come.

im with ramey - think now about how you want your tank to be when it is stocked - then start with the mellow ones and go from there I would go for something like a blenny or goby - they tend to be easy to care for.

I got a pair of clowns as starter fish for my tank. They are in QT now... They seem easy enough to care for. Is there an issue using clowns as a first fish?

It depends on what type of clowns. Occelaris or Perula clowns probably won't be a problem at all. Anything else may may harass new additions to the tank, like maroon clowns or other aggressive species.

If you'd like to eventually have a clown, I don't think there's anything wrong with making it your first fish. Most are fairly hardy, they are a member of the damselfish species.
My first two fish were a blue devil damsel and a maroon clown in a 75 gal. No issues, they were both juveniles and did no damage to each other. Later additions did produce some defending of territory but I haven't had a fatality attributed to either the maroon or the damselfish.
