My first fish was a Royal Gramma, hardy and colourful. Never regretted the purchase.

I think Royal Grammas are one of the very best "first fish". They are hardy, beautiful fish and are rarely aggressive towards other fish. They do tend to get bullied by more aggressive fish, so if you do plan on having one, add it early.

PLEASE don't get damsels. Little devils. Always being fed... they're impossible to kill line... you'll never get them out and besides that point... why would you get a fish that is "hard to kill"?
