any suggestions on a good first fist in my new 120 gallon tank. prefer to keep it cheap and very hardy it will be my first saltwater fish ever!

excited.

What kind of tank do you plan on keeping: fowlr, corals?
Has your tank cycled yet?
From my current knowledge of your system the only thing that I would recommend is an Ocellaris Clown and only if your parameters are good.
Give us more info and you will get several suggestions.

Clowns are always fun to watch. You may also want to consider some kind of schooling fish, like putting in a few green chromis. They're pretty easy to keep and also neat to watch.

Royal gramma was my first fish several years ago, and still have it today. Colorful, cheap, easy to care for, and has always been a model citizen. He's huge now, and draws more attention from guests than any of my other (much more expensive) fish. An underrated fish in my opinion.

Everyone needs a Clown...

OK, there is always that one kid spittin' cereal at you that doesn't want more cash...

Clown (preferably a pair) is always a classic choice. Interesting. Hardy. Disease resistant. Readily available in captive bred form.

My very first fish was a yellow tail damsel from Petco. I still have him and he's always minded his own business. Definitely not as interesting as clowns though.

Clowns are boring! That being said they are decent fish as a first fish. If you get a pair they will become aggressive and they will want to "own" a lot of space.

Damsels are mean!! At least in most cases they seem to be mean.

If you were ever thinking of getting a firefish you want to introduce that first so it becomes comfortable in its surroundings before you put aggressive fish in the tank (careful they are jumpers)

What about a goby-shrimp pairing?

In general you want to try and put your least aggressive fish in first and let them claim their niche so they don't get bullied when they are first put in.

My recommendation is to try and think of all the fish you like/want and post it on RC and see what people think.

was thinking about a clown pair but cant find any around here for cheap every pair i find is about 150 and if i buy 2 smaller one they are like 25 bucks each i just think that is soo expensive for clowns.

+1 to clowns but make sure to quarantine them for 4-6 weeks...so that you don't bring in any unwanted disease's.

My first fish was a lionfish I rescued from the lfs. A D. zebra to be exact. If you like the look of lionfish, I'd get a D. Brachypterus aka Fuzzy Lionfish or if you want a larger Lion, P. volitans aka Volitan Lionfish are very, very hardy fish.

The Clownfish pair or royal gramma are great options. I'd also consider a starry blenny. He'll help to take care of algae issues, plus he has a great personality too.
