Well I had my water tested because everything was looking a little better. Turns out like this

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Phosphates were just traceable
Calcium - 500
PH- 8.0

So everything was looking in order besides my PH is slightly low so I'm using a buffer to get it up right now.

I wanted to get something so I picked up a few guys to help clean up. A sandsifting starfish and a diamond sandsifting goby to take care of the remaining diatom outbreak I was having.

I also picked up a smaller sailfin tang which is doing great already friends with his tankmates. I'll be posting pics in a few days.

Take the sand sifter star back! It will wipe out the microfauna in your sandbed. Trade it for hermits or snails...

he hasn't really moved around much yet but i guess i can see your point. I didn't think it would be that bad in such a big tank. I'm just glad my first cycle is over. I had a bad diatom outbreak that was leading to a lot of brown algeas on the sandbed and within two days its cleared up tremendously on its own.

Sand sifters feed mainly on live microfauna and evenin a large tank will limit or lower the populations substantially. But don't take my word for it, do a little reading on 'em. What a maroon!

What a maroon!

I think that is "moron", but it still wasn't very nice.

Also, the "experts" state that a 125 or larger, with a well established DSB and lots of exposed sand (not covered by the rock) will support a sand sifting star. Anything less is not a good idea.

Don't speak-up if you don;t know what you are responding to as you attempt to educate may be followed by and educational experience. "Maroon" is part of a line in a Buggs Bunny cartoon from the early 80's (ie "What a Maroon, what a ta rah rah GOON Dee-aye"). And we;'re tlaking about a BRAND NEW tank devoid of DSB not an established system. Sometimes it's advisable to read and gain a full understanding of a subject before chiming in. Beside that, Aptasiafarmer (Coralfarmer) is a buddy of mine who I'm just ribbing.

lol, it seemed like a good idea at first when I was at the LFS, maybe you should rip on mike a little too he's had one in his 75 since the beginning. Shoot me the link on these things so i can see for myself. Also I may have gotten a job at the LFS so my rebuilding may be speeding up as the tank matures.

And the tank isn't "brand new" I've got 300 pounds of liverock from my existing system, that should have more than seeded the tank enough to have a bio system going strong now two weeks later.

The comment from the peanut gallery was based on an "established" tank with "established" DSB. I know you moved the LR and that it will clear and cycle fairly quickly. And I was just busting yer chops as a joke anyway. S LFS employee eh? So will you get fored to first time you tell someone NOT to buy something incompatible? LOL Major dilema for anyone with reef ethics dude! Your boss will look at you like you have 2 heads! "You just sent a customer away with nothing?"

Fatbrizio has a sifter too! It's not that it's the end of the world... I just assume that the other carnivores and pod eaters are much cooler than plaing old sifters. There will be an argument that the sifters "turn-over" the sandbed which is valid but hermits and Nass snails do that too withouy being detrimental. Oh, I guess I should point out that some snails are omnivorous and some hermits may pick at corals so having them as sand stirrers could remotely cause more trouble than good. Did I miss anything? LOL

no you pretty much summed it up. I didn't realize when buying it that it could cause problems, I'll def be taking him back sometime soon, he's doing a great job of cleaning up my sandbed thou.

On the goodside I'll get a heck of a discount and the LFS is one that doesn't really require many people to run it. I'd say its bigger than the critter but nowhere near as spectacular. Its got a bunch of fish only tanks and a huge row devoted to corals. Only one SPS tank thou but i got about 20 expensive fish on my wishlist so i could really use the at cost discount. My fishlist consists of achilles tang, chevron tang, unicorn tang, pair of wanatabei angels, male crosshatch trigger, anthias, and maybe a school of tiny yellow tangs. I'm also looking for expensive fairy wrasses (mystery wrasses, lineatus wrasse, scotts painted wrasses etc.) so I could save a bundle by getting them at cost ya know :)

Sounds good to me, just don't go buying Moorish Idols again.... LOL

I'm really into gobies and blennies myself. Tangs and wrasses are cool because they swim alot and a dozen anthia woiuld make a cool and colorful school. Don't get yellow tangs, seems like everyone has 'em. If mine wasn't so big and healthy I'd gladly swap him for more gobies...

Thought I lost me mandarin last week. I hadn't seen her for days then yesterday afternoon she was out feeding.. I guess that extra 80 lb of LR keeps her occupied out of sight, Haven't seen my Yashia Goby in weeks but I did see the pistol yesterday so I guess they just relocated to a quieter neighborhood.

That Yashia Goby you have is awesome, I'm def going to get one of them also. I know everyone has yellow tangs but look for them to get rarer. I just heard that hawaii has put a ban on collecting them since they have been getting over collected. I just want something that is eye catching. Tank of the month remember. It won't be till 2009 but i'm going to do it. lol

I heard the same thing last year Ryan. Same thing for a few snail varieties. They both turned out to be hoaxes... This new one may be true, hard to tell. I've never heard of anyone breeding yellow tangs in captivity either so that could make ours valuable eh? LOL Mine would die tomorrow I bet. LOL

lol i gave mine to mike when i moved. He also got a donation of a frogspawn colony and all thats left of my huge cap. he better grow me some frags

Lights, filtration, LR, Skimmer, and Water changes. Simple... I've never seen a single strand in my 120. The nano was a different story and a daily battle.

Hey you guys are makin fun of me and not even tellin me on here.... OK first of i officially do not have a single strand of hair algea any more i think the tang ate it.... as for the two corals ryan gave me the frogspawns 8 heads are already startin to split... and the cap has grown between an inch and two inches in the last four months..... OH and the tiny rock of sweet zoos Paul gave me at the last MY-SEA meeting went from 5 polyops to almost a hundred.... i get great growth .... Oh and speakin of zoos does anyone want some purple with green skirts.... i have a rock with about 500 to 1000 polyops on it... just let me know..
