nice work . .. . the lens might be new to you but clearly not using a camera :). Well done.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Here is one from my meteor shower (hand held, so maybe not as sharp):

What program did you use?
I'm assuming you mean for post processing? I used Lightroom and Photoshop.

Nice shots, how do you like the 7d? I am thinking of selling my 50d and 40d to get a 7d.. Jeff
The 7D is a very solid camera and a very good performer. I like it a lot. Only thing I'm hoping for (via firmware upgrade) is the ranged auto-iso feature that the 550D has. Other than that, I can't complain. It is a bit on the heavy side but that makes it a bit more stable in my hands (until they get tired :) ).

I would have to agree. very nice shots.
Thanks

How far were you standing back from your tank when you took these macro shots.. Also, if the 550D/T2i was out when you purchased your 7D.. Would you still have gone that direction or would you have saved the money.. I'm on the fence about this purchase right now... Your thoughts would be very helpful. Thanks.

The image quality of the 7D and T2i is virtually identical. They use basically the same sensor and both use DiGiC 4 processors (the 7D has two, the T2i only has one).

The 7D gives you a larger, more rugged and weather sealed body. It also has a faster burst mode thanks to it's twin image processors. The 7D also has the only 100% coverage viewfinder outside of the 1D series. It's also much larger and heavier than the T2i.

Both are very capable cameras. Read the sticky up top. If money is tight, I'd recommend getting the cheaper body and investing in a good lens.

I was almost at minimum focus distance for all shots. For the corals that was basically on the front glass.

The 550D was out when I got my 7D. Basically for the benefits beerguy pointed out. And actually there is one major reason. Unfortunately if you say you shoot with a xxxD model, you are not likely to get a gig as a second shooter, where as if you say you have a xD it is more likely (It happened to me once...). I personally like the nice viewfinder of the 7D and the heavier body. It feels more stable in my hands. Also the hi-speed burst mode is a killer if you try to catch a fast moving object :)

If this is going to be your first DSLR, go with the 550D. If you're upgrading from a xxxD, and you don't mind spending $500 for the benefits of the 7D, then go for it.

Edit: Here is a nice list of differences between 550 and 7d taken from the dpreview forums:
* a pentamirror viewfinder (7D: pentaprism)
* 95% coverage viewfinder (7D: 100%)
* a 87% magnification (7D: 100%)
* 19mm eye point relief (7D: 22mm)
* no electronic level (7D: Yes)
* no grid on demand (7D: Yes)
* 3.7 fps for 6 frames (7D: 8 fps for 16 frames)
* only a single cross type AF sensor at the center (7D 19 cross type AF sensors, 3 with extra precision)
* only 9 AF points (7D: 19)
* the singe Digic IV has to process the images and calculate AF positions (7D: 2 Digic IV to process the images and an extra dedicated AF CPU).
* no macro focus mode (7D: doubling of focus position calculation speed to 60 calc.sec)
* flash sync of 1/200th (7D: 1/250)
* no flash master built in (7D: Yes)
* built in flash FOV coverage 18mm (7D: 15mm)
* no PC-sync connector (7D: Yes)
* no weather sealing (7D: Yes)
* no free selection of image formats to go with RAW (7D: Yes)
* predictive AF up to 10m (7D: up to 8m)
* no coupling of metering and subject detection via AF sensor array (7D: Yes)
* no top LCD (7D: Yes)
* no "zebras" (overexposed highlighting when you preview the image" (7D: Yes)

Beerguy & Terahz,

Thank you both for your replies.. I bit the bullet after reading both of your replies and picked up a 7D kit with a 100mm fixed 2.8 lens late yesterday.. I did not get the IS model lens since, I am essentially a beginner and could not justify the additional cost. At some point, I may trade up to that lens if I can see the benefit of doing so.. I may have some questions along the way.. I hope you guys wont mind a question here and there.. My apologies for the thread hijack... Thanks again for the assist guys! :thumbsup:

If you're shooting tank macros using a tripod, IS won't be much help. Handholding outside, IS would be useful.
