First time fragging

I have a fairly large mushroom leather, and I am looking to frag a piece off. I have done alot of reading on the subject from different techniques and methods of cutting and securing the frag. I am pretty nervous for my coral as this is my very first time attempting this. Anyone have any last minute advice on this before it goes under the knife to help with some of my nervousness :hmm2:

I think I am going to go with taking a small container filled with rubble so that I can place it in the tank in a low flow area and place the frag in there.

That should work great for you. Just make sure it is getting some flow...you dont want it to blow away but it does need a little bit of flow otherwise they kinda rot away. Good luck.

I am wondering though, if I mess up the frag and it dies, how often does the host coral die? It is about 10 in across the cap to kinda give an idea of it's size. I wanna just snip about 3 in. off of the overhang on the back side.

Well, I cut a piece off and have it placed in my rubble container. I placed it where it has a little flow, but not enough to really blow it around. Hopefully I did all this correctly and both the frag and my host will heal up.

you will be fine, just cut when it is out of your tank. you dot want it to release its toxins into your tank. have a container with some of your tank saltwater ready for the frags to soak in till they stop expelling their toxins.

personaly for me the rubble rock thing is too long of a wait for me. I just thread a tooth pick through the bottom of the frag leaving pieces of the tooth pick exposed so I can directly glue that onto whatever rock or frag disk I want it on.

I had already cut it when you posted, but thanks for advice. I actually did cut the coral while inside my tank and added some extra carbon in hopes of pulling out the toxins. I read that this is something that can be done with carbon. As far as the toothpick, I may try that, but I am really not in any hurry. My host coral has shrunken quite a bit from the cutting. Hopefully it will expand again soon. The frag that I cut off has already extended polyps back out and didn't really shrink in size (Hopefully a good sign). Will keep posted here how my host and frag turn out from my first attempt.

My leather was pretty peeved for a week or so after I fragged a piece off, but recovered nicley and you'd never know I cut it. You can use a wide rubberband to keep the frag snug against the rock rubble for it to attach. It takes a couple of weeks for it to attach.

It seems my leather is pretty forgiving. Today it has fully extended it's cap and all it's polyps. The frag is doing nicely too. I thought about the rubberband method, and figured I would wait. I know I can cut the frag more if I put the rubberband too tight and I have no idea how tight is too tight. I have a friend of mine that runs a LFS and he is gonna show me some ways to do some fragging whenever I go back to where he is (out of state). My purpose for cutting this piece off was to give it to someone. Anyone have any idea when I can move it to their tank?

As of today, I realized that the frag had attached itself to some of the rubble. It has been very healthy throughout this whole time. Right now it is dripping to go into the new tank. As of right now it looks like my first frag was a success.

Any Pics of the process? That is one thing I have not fragged yet. I know what you mean about being nervous I always get a little apprehensive about fragging something new.

place frag on ruble rock wrap bridal veil over rock tie with rubber band put in tank let set for a few weeks till attached then take off veil yeah frag in tank

Sorry, no I didn't take any pictures during the process. I do have access to the tank that the frag is now placed in and I can get some pictures up of how the frag has healed up. I will also get a pic up here of my host coral where it was cut. As far as being nervous about it, I realize now it wasn't such a big deal. I literally just took some stainless steel scissors and picked a spot to cut off. After that I just took the bottom off of a plastic water bottle and filled it with rubble and placed frag inside. I'll try to get some pictures of the finished product up either today or tomorrow.

lewis2325 , Still want to see those photos. Trying to get enough courage to frag mine and I think your pics might help me take the leap.

Ok, I will get some pictures up for you tomorrow. It will only be of the frag removed though, my host is pretty sad looking as we went through removing the sand bed tonight, and a little more work to finish up tomorrow. I have been pretty busy with moving so I kinda just forgot about the pictures.
