Fish Food

Can I get some ideas on the best foods for fish and coral? I'm currently feeding Mysis, Brine and Copipods. Once in a while dry pellets. I feed once a day.

Stock list: Clown Pair, Diamond Goby, Leopard Wrasse, skunk cleaner, some Zoas, some palys, mummy eye, hammer, acan, mushroom and leptasria. I really have no clue what the best was to feed any of them are and I should really figure it out. Any thoughts?

LRS Foods (Larry's Reef Services) is pretty fantastic. Any of his blends are pretty spot on. There is a spot on their page to look for local stores that carry it.

I would suggest Chefzilla food. Brent is a great guy and isn't nearly as commercialized... Chefzillas food also doesn't give angelfish bloat, same can't be said for the other

Are you saying you know of cases of LRS giving angelfish bloat?

Yes... Link doesn't work but I'm guessing that you're referring to Genicanthus Personatus?? There has been well documented info by Humaguy (Ted) on the matter with the Personatus, he doesn't feed his food anymore and neither does Karen with the ones she breeds. I assure you this is not made up and I don't know a single person that has a GP or pairs of GPs that feeds LRF because of this. I know 7 people who have GPs BTW.

Some sort of white fish I believe. It could be in many foods that are similar to LRF but I know chefzilla food doesn't cause the issue. I think it's only with the GPs so I'm by no means suggesting that LRF give bloat to all angels. I would lean toward the Alaskan Cod but that's just speculation

That's really interesting. I'm assuming nobody wants to volunteer their GP's as test subjects to start eliminating potential contributors lol.

Much of what is stated above is false and exaggerated. One scorned person's experience is not gospel. Karen has since stated she has observed the G. personatus juveniles "swell" when ingesting various dry and frozen foods and the fish return to normal after a period of time.

Karen is also still a customer of LRS, as are many people who have been feeding LRS to their G. personatus since Day one. Andrew Sandler in NY has a trio, Todd Gardner the researcher has EIGHT in is NY lab which are fed LRS on a daily basis for over a year.

In addition Koji Wada in Japan and HK Sealife in Hong Kong import LRS for use with the most delicate species in the world including Gp and peppermint angels. There are recent videos floating around youtube and Facebook with G personatus and peppermint, conspic, narcosis and other angels consuming LRS foods.

This Reef Exhibit in Korea opens in June and they are feeding LRS to the entire collection of what will soon be nearly 2 Million dollars worth of rare and exotic fish INCLUDING the most recent shipment of Karen's "accidental" Gp.

It would seem odd to me the curator would incur shipping and import tariffs of over $500 per 60 pack cooler if the foods were causing adverse effects.

The copepods will populate on their own, no need to buy them. But if you have a sump you can put some piles of rock rubble down there to give them a safe place to breed. A little mesh bag is nice too cause you can lift them up in it to clean the sump. They like chaeto to breed in also, if you're going that way for nutrient reduction

You can use a turkey baster a couple times a week to fire some food at the hammer and Acan (gently). Not sure about the chalice or lep, the rest don't need food, just light.

For my standard food I use this recipe, modified by what I can easily find at the store http://www.melevsreef.com/node/1616 Mine get flakes or pellets in the morning cause I'm always rushing, this blender mush the other 2-3 feedings each day
EDIT: I skip the krill in that recipe, just superstitious of it

For treats
- clams from the deli. Open and remove top shell, freeze on the half shell and shave to order into the tank. Reserve the juice for recipe above and to soak pellets for picky eaters. This is my tanks fave
- live worms. White worm culture is easy and low profile. Black worms are better but more of a project to keep alive. I put some selcon on the worm food to boost them in fish vitamins. Wrasse goes absolutely bonkers for these, I wish I had space for a more profesh worm breeder
- live baby shrimp hatchery. Paulb has a nice diy one. They hatch and go up a tube into the tank.

Ummm, idk if someone mentioned this, but by far the best option is making your own food.

Way cheaper, and you can control what goes in.

I use fresh oysters, raw sardines (or other fresh not canned small fish) raw shrimp, and sometimes a bit of nori (seaweed sheet).

Freeze it all, let it thaw just a bit, then blend it up and refreeze.

When I feed, I just break off however big a chunk that I need.

Costs about $20-30 for a gallon size ziplock full.

Some people use ice cube trays to portion them, freeze it, then transfer to ziplock.

Again, this is the freshest, healthiest, and cheapest way to feed your tank. You control every aspect, and you know exactly how old it is.

Most flakes and pellets are so old from sitting in 3 different facilities before they get to your house.
