I was at PTF the other week and he offers deals when the fish is still bagged and I was wondering if they need to be qted.

LOL................you're joking, right?

It seems to that most of the diseases are growing in the LFS tanks.

Hey all,
I'm just wondering what size QT systems your running and how there setup? Are you QTing corals as well?

I think the fish are healthier at the wholesaler compared to PTF. Nevertheless you should quarantine regardless. I by a lot of my fish from PTF during the Sunday bagged fish sale as well. Only disadvantage is you can't see if the fish eats before buying

Also beware of the salinity of wholesale bagged fish. Its usually alot lower so acclimate slowly.

I would definitely quarantine any fish you plan on putting into your system regardless of where you get them. Why take the chance? BTW, I wouldn't be surprised if your LFSs get most of their problems from the wholesalers.

Hi Mark,

Did you get your tank back?

I have a 29 gallon setup for qt with left over equipment (remora pro skimmer, mj 1200 powerhead, heater), live rock, live sand, pods and 2 cleaner shrimp. I have a mini might light that I put on over the eggcrate after the first few weeks. If I had more room, I might go with a 40 breeder.

I also have a 10 gallon tank (with hang on filter for oxygenation, pvc hiding place and heater) for medicating.

I haven't qt'd any corals yet, but I am really considering it and will probably start.

ok...bro
You do realize that I have met many reefers who have been keeping fish a lot longer than you and never QT their fish and never have problems.

I actually do QT everything! so I guess I already read a book or two.

If you don't QT your fish and coral nobody will. Some, if not most wholesalers only do dips to fight off some things. That will slow the progression and get the animal out the door alive.

I've really never understood the concept of bag sales at least here in CA where we are so close to the source.

I've taking 4 fish in bags straight from the wholeseller and they seem less stress and eat within a day(maybe i've been lucky) Also it seems like i have more problems with fish that goes into the LFS tank for a day or two and then in my tank. So i either take it when the fish are still in the bag from the wholeseller or wait a week or two while the fish are in the LFS tank.

But yes i would QT the fish.
