fish going from high nitrate tank to low nitrate

I have yet another nubie question... We want to move a yellow tang from a tank with constant and notoriously high nitrates (40-80!) to a tank with steady almost zero nitrates. Incidentally, we've made lots of attempts at dropping those nitrates - topic for many a thread. Does anyone have experience with this? Can I do a many-hour acclimation or is this not enough?

I am not suggesting you do this, just a comment. I never acclimate anything fish or invert., Just my opinion, but acclimation can be worse then just just float 10 minutes, and net out. Temp is important, but container stress is no fun, if the temp is with in a few degrees, I get them out as fast as possible. Also when transporting fish try to black out bag. To answer your question, I have read you should acclimate from high nitrates and one of the causes could be your tang, they put out a lot of waste matter

I would drip acclimate for about an hour. 40-80ppm, though not ideal, is not a death sentence for most fish and it shouldn't be that big of an adjustment for it to go to a zero ppm tank as long as the temp is close or proper acclimation is performed.

A yellow tang is also a fairly hardy fish, as long as it appears healthy in the current environment you realistically could probably net it out and drop it in the new tank and as long as the temp is within 3-5 degrees of each other the fish will probably be fine... of course it will experience considerable shock so don't do this if the fish is not very healthy.
