Does anyone know the rates at which fish grow in an aquarium? Is it like a dog, where most of its growth occurs in the first year and after that there is little to no increase in size (maybe some muscle mass and weight)? Or is it more linear, so a 10" fish grows 1-2" a year and only approaches full size after a significant number of years?
It probably depends on the species of fish. I am primarily interested in butterflyfishes but also others.
To say it differently, if you are buying a fish that grows to 8", is a 2.5" specimen substantially younger than a 5" one?
