Fish my tang won't bully

The tang is likely going to dislike other fish with the same body shape - other tangs, angelfish, butterflyfish, and rabbitfish. Unless he is particularly aggressive, he should leave fish alone that have different body shapes (wrasses, anthias, gobies, etc)

That's all hopeful, then. I don't think the pseudochromis has a very similar body type.

what is your tang doing when you put fish in? My kole tang will charge at newcomers but they quickly retreat to the rocks and he forgets about them. it takes a couple of days but he gets used to the fish.

So far I have added a tailspot blenny since the kole tang and will be adding another wrasse soon. The tang mostly bothered the blenny because he was chewing "his" algae but he doesn't seem to mind him.

try turning the lights down when adding a new fish and feed the tang some goodies before dumping the new one in. this tends to work just by sheer distraction. of course mine is loopy and chases his reflection all day so yours might react differently.

hope all goes well!!

So far, the tang is my only fish! Great tips on feeding and the lights - I will definitely do that!

Yes, my Kole is a bit loopy, too. He does the reflection thing sometimes before bed, has to be in EVERY photo, and lately likes to poop in the same spot for a while. Weirdo!

Have you ever considered an acclimation box? I'm thinking of trying to find one that is longer than normal - maybe if I don't succeed, I'll look into making one. Definitely wouldn't have to be perfect, since water will flow through it anyway!

My kole considers itself the boss of my 185, and gets first "crack" at all newcomers. He harasses them for a day or two, then ignores them. Acclimation boxes give the newcomer time to calm down and scope out the tank so when you release them they aren't as freaked out. However, it will not, IME keep your tang from harassing the new guy.

The only fish that he's completely ignored were a dispar anthia, possum wrasse, and a pair of filefish. Angels, rabbits, anything else have been hazed.

My yellow eye was a complete freak. It didn't go after the mandarin goby, I have never seen a fish go after them. It chased everyone else all the time, until I pulled him.

Robin, I'd love to get an acclimation box. Good to hear he ignored the anthias, as they are still a consideration. Thanks! :)

:thumbdown Not good!

Sorry, didn't want to be a bummer. All fish are different. Anthias would most likely be your best bet. They swim more in the middle top of the tank and don't eat the same food. I wouldn't put an algae eating blenny in with him. If he doesn't get along with other fish you could always put a purple tang in with him, that will straighten him out.
