Fish needs a home!!

I have a large American Cichlid (Blue Gill) LOL that I need to find a home for. It is currently in what was and I hope to return my reef tank. I got out of the hobby a few years back and a freind gave me a 1/2 " long blue gill that I put in my reef tank converted to FW , well 3 years later here he is and I need to find him a home. I hate to return him to the pond he came out of because he is so domesticated. My wife also would worry to death about his well being in the wild. He is very large and colored beutifully. Anyone in East Tenn. want a large Blue Gill?:)
 
Anyone have any suggestions on finding this fish a home? It is standing in the way of me getting my reef tank back up.
 
Since it is a blue gill there really would not be too much problem if you returned him there. He would become "wild" again in no time. I doubt disease or parasites would be much of an issue.
You could give him the sidewalk treatment as well.
 
I agree, since he's a native fish releasing him would be a fine idea. You probably won't find anyone local that will want to take a bluegill off your hands. I've heard american sunfish are/were prized in the UK but not here......except to eat of course:)

Thats what I was thinking... I know a bunch of people that would welcome it at a Fish Fry... :)
 
I often joked about eating him if times got hard, but after raising him and hand feeding him crickets for 3 years I think I will let Gil swim. He is a male maybe he can "hook up " with a good looking female Blue Gill. After being stuck in this tank his whole life I am sure he could use it! LOL
 
Poor joke. I had a friend who use to say he had to give a sick fish the "sidewalk treatment". He also used the tree method too.
It sounds cruel but when you don't have any MS222 or ice to kill a fish it is a humane way to kill a fish.
 
Isn't it illegal to keep native species? Not trying to be controversial (I may do it one day if it is or if it isn't... I LOVE sunfish! ;) ), just curious.

Do you love the taste??? Or just the looks??? Or perhaps the enjoyment of one on the end of your line?!?!?!?

Must be going fishing, Good luck? You think this is early. Try getting up six days a week before the rooster even gets off the roost, then going to bed before them..
 
Hmmm... I always "heard" it was, but oh well!

And actually I like all three! :D

There's a pond in the mountains just over the state line past Newport and Del Rio that has these little perch that are just amazingly beautiful little fish... I plan on keeping some one day... they only get about 4" long. Its interesting because some of them have the "blue" gill and some don't... but they're all brilliant orange, yellow, blues, and greens. :)

Some of my best fishing memories are big bluegill putting up the fight of a small largemouth bass! :D

If it is something like a bass or sunfish no problem. Basically anything you would take to eat you could keep. You have a fishing licence so it would be the same thing. Of course if there is a size limit and if a wildlife officer looked into your cooler you might have issues.
If it is a non-game species such as a darter I would think you would need a collecting permit. Also if it was a threaten or endangered species and you were caught with it there would be some major problems. But I doubt anyone here would catch one.

If anyone did this just remember about disease or parasites. Look the fish over, look for fin lesions or black spots. There are a few other sunfish that are prettier than a blue gill btw such as a red breast and they are sunfish.
 
Tennessee River I think... Right near campus... Can't remember the name of the Put in... I think it was some park... :)
 
I've had much better luck in the middle (concord area) and lower end (just up from the dam) of Ft Loudon than the upper end. I thought you were gonna take Chris on the Clinch..? I've read that sm mouth fishing is great on the Holston which I believe feeds the TN River upstream of Forks of the River.
 
The Holston and the French Broad join creating what is known as 3 rivers about 2 miles up stream from South Knoxville bridge. If you run up the French Broad (to the right running upstream) just after you pass under John Sevier high way you will come to some shoals. Best Smallmouth fishing around!! Topwater early and small tubes as the sun comes up. I have enjoyed many a 20+ day of Smallmouth and Kentucky's. Some over 5lbs.
 
Well, since I don't work there anymore, I guess I'll share this with you guys... :)

If your wife is shopping in Tanger Five Oaks and you're bored, there is some awesome fishing in the creek that runs next to it. I had a friend who used to go fishing on his lunch breaks... lol... he got a hold of a huge small mouth once... also lots of other fish in there. We were working in Bible Factory Outlet (before they folded :rolleyes: ... long story) and he would just walk over to it. Good stuff! :)
