fish plan?

i am having a hard time deciding wat kind of fish to start my tank off with. I know damsells are very hardy but are very territorial. if you have any suggestions please help me.
 
If by saying "starting off you tank" you mean "cycling your tank" I wouldnt use any fish at all. You can simply place a couple pieces of shrimp in there to kick start your bacteria.
 
After the cycle and when te tank is stable enough to house fish, I would choose very carefully. There are some fish that require to be placed in last.
Great starter fish that get along with basically everything are...

I am going off of reef friendly fish, If you are going to have a FOWLR, there are alot of aggressive fish you can choose from.

Groupers
Angelfish
 
How big is your tank? Here is the combo from one of my tanks and it is both colorful and peaceful

Purple Tang
Mated Maroons
FoxFace
Flame Hawk
Mandarin
3 Firefish
Mystery Wrasse
Banded Goby
 
I have a 55 with nano fish: my peaceful kingdom is the following:
corals, with a yellow watchman goby, a red firefish, a purple firefish, a mandarin, a rainford goby (looks and acts like a wrasse), and a frenetic blue chromis.
If I had a hundred gallons, I'd add: two chromises, another mandarin, a pair of scooter blennies, a lawnmower blenny, and a jawfish. Maybe one purple tang.
 
I am also very confused with what kind of fish I can put together :(

so far, i'm thinking of:
-bluechin triggerfish
-purple tang / yellow tang
-flame angel / coral beauty
-clownfish
-chromis
-emperor angelfish (later on)

these will be together in a 120g tank. Are these fish compatible? Also, would the trigger eat clams? I would love to put one in eventually.
 
I wouldn't put a Purple Tang with a Yellow Yang even in a 120 Gallon tank. They have the same shape and for tangs that is not a good thing. You might have a chance if you add them together even then it's still very risky. I had both a yellow tang and Purple at different times in different tanks and I prefer the purple tang. The same goes for Coral beauty and Flame angel best to have only one small angel in the same tank.

Another great fish that can go in reef or FO tank is a yellow wrasse. Very colorful active fish doesn't bother anything in my reef.
 
My question is, you posted that a yellow tang is a good starter fish? I have always been told they do not need to be added to a new tank until it is at least six months old and that tangs should be the last fish that you add to your tank because of territorial issues so why would it be a great starter fish????
 
Powder Blue Tang is definetly not a great starter fish...... I wouldn't add this fish to any new system. It developes ick very easy and it should be added to a large system last because it can get very aggressive.
 
I think if you are going to start with a tang, a yellw would be the way to go. I added my yellow tang as one of the first fish and have not had any problems. Of course, she was tiny when I got her. (the size of a half dollar maybe)
 
A yellow tang should be fine in a 100g tank.

The emperor angelfish can grow to over a foot long, so if you want one of them, you'll probably want to cut back on the other animals appropriately. I suspect that it'd nip at clams as well.
